The pumpkin wagon is back, and “Gary” has returned to keep a watchful eye over this .

The season is upon us; get your pumpkin at the Pumpkin Wagon. $5 per pumpkin, on the honor system, corner of South Gratz and E. Main Street.

Thanks again to the Greathouse family for providing this small-town Halloween charm, and to our city employees for dusting Gary off and helping him up. 🎃 💀 👻 🍁

Recently, there’s been a little bit of talk about Midway having the highest home values in central Kentucky. That’s one metric of affordability, for sure. We hope our policy of infill will help alleviate this as more homes can be built without expanding the urban services boundary. But let’s look at another metric: property taxes.

Property taxes are a regressive tax, meaning lower-income families pay a bigger share than high-income families. When we began receiving much more occupational taxes (by far our largest source of city income) because of new job creation in Midway, we knew home values would increase, so we began lowering our property tax rate in 2018.

Recent trends in home values have further triggered reductions in our tax rate, but everyone is having do that (the more cynical acting like that’s an actual tax cut, when it’s not.)

Just like we’re doing with water, we’re focusing on how we can improve affordability without hamstringing our local government.

Here’s a list of cities in our region (excluding the consolidated Lexington/Fayette) and their property tax rates.

The Rau Building was integral in the early economic development of Midway. Soon after German-Jewish immigrants William E. and Caroline Rau moved to Midway in 1876, they contracted with builder David Lehman to construct a two-story building at the corner of Railroad (E. Main) and Winter Streets.

It became a grocery, restaurant, and hotel, and later served as the telephone exchange and post office. It must have doubled as a community gathering center in its early days, as it continues to be today.

Recently, descendants Jeanie Ray and her son, Caleb Rau Ray, visited from Tennessee and we presented a proclamation to honor their family’s contribution to Midway.

Today, this building serves as our City Hall, where council meetings are held, as well as our Midway Museum and Visitor’s Center. We’ve recently completed work on the roof and stairs behind the building, and will continue to maintain this important part of our city’s history.

I’m devastated for Trooper Hayden Philips, who was killed in the line of duty today in Warren County. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers our brave men and women in police uniforms face everyday. Prayers for him and his family and friends, as well as everyone at KSP.

Council Member Kaye Nita Gallagher, Asst. City Clerk Sonya Conner, and I attended the Kentucky League of Cities annual conference in Covington this week.

We learned all kinds of important things, like how we can possibly receive more money towards road paving, why “abstaining” from votes isn’t a real thing in Kentucky (it should count as an actual vote with the majority), and we found a potential partner for our sidewalk cost sharing program that can help us and citizens stretch their dollars further. More to come on all that!

Also, congratulations to Council Member Mary Raglin and Council Member Patrick Hall for achieving the Level II Excellence in City Governance award. Sonya Conner received the Level III Master of City Governance award!

The 52nd Midway Fall Festival was a model of planning and ex*****on. Festival Coordinator Elisha Ann Holt-Meier and Midway Business Association President Cortney Neikirk were presented with changes, growth, and new logistics that brought plenty of challenges. They never dwelled on problems, they focused on solutions, and solutions are what they found.

Thank you to the entire Festival committee, the Midway Business Association, the merchants, and everyone involved in the planning. Thank you to Zachary Rankin for coordinating the volunteers. Thank you to each volunteer, fire fighters, police, EMS, vendors, artists, musicians, parking attendants, visitors, and everyone who braved the heat with a smile on their face.

I’ve already heard from residents and visitors who feel that the new setup was a success, and I agree. More great causes were helped because of this. That’s why we can’t ever be afraid to think differently and work together.

Lastly, thank you to our residents, who shared their town with grace and patience, and showed just why this place is special.

Happy Fall Festival!

🏆 The 52nd annual Midway Fall Festival is almost here, and it’s going to be a hot one!

💦 Thank you to our new water supplier, Frankfort Plant Board, for providing this refilling station for the weekend.

💧 🧊 City employees will be filling it with ice and water each morning of the festival - so don’t forget to stay hydrated - the majority of medical issues each year are related to heat/dehydration.

This festival brings a lot: joy, fun, community, and it can also bring a few hassles. Traffic will be slow through town, especially during peak hours, so try to plan accordingly.

But the festival is a wonderful showcase of America’s greatest small town, and it helps sustain local businesses as well as raising money for numerous important local causes.

As I sat through our annual POW/MIA ceremony at Midway Cemetery today, it reminded me that when I get annoyed by something this weekend - and I will - to remember what those brave servicemen and women wouldn’t give for one more weekend in the sun with friends and neighbors.

Because they already gave it. 🇺🇸

Happy Fall Festival! 🍂 ☀️ 🚂
