Happy Wild Wednesday, everyone! Today we are putting the spotlight on the incredible Merlin!

Don't let their size fool you, this small, compact raptor is one of the fiercest and most dynamic birds of prey in the falcon family.

Fun Fact: They might be tiny, but they are built for speed and are absolutely relentless hunters!

Have you ever spotted a Merlin in the wild? Let us know in the comments!

What happens to the leaves after they fall?

Ever wonder why nature doesn’t clean up the leaves?

Those fallen leaves are actually doing some pretty important work!

*They feed the soil. As leaves break down, they return nutrients like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus to the soil, helping nourish trees and plants.

*They provide a home. Leaf litter creates important shelter for overwintering insects, toads, salamanders, turtles, and other small creatures.

*They support wildlife. Birds and other animals rely on the insects and tiny creatures living beneath the leaves for food.

*They protect plant roots. A layer of leaves acts like a natural blanket, helping insulate roots, hold moisture in the soil, and reduce w**d growth.

So the next time you see a pile of leaves on the ground, remember: it’s not a mess it’s a mini ecosystem!

When possible, leave the leaves where they fall and let nature do its work.

Sunday Funday! Wild Aware Clue #12

We might be a little stinky, but we are a fascinating part of Utah’s wildlife! Two different species of our family live right here in Utah, one sporting stripes and the other covered in spots.
As versatile omnivores, we aren't picky eaters and will munch on just about anything. However, you'll want to give us plenty of space. Not only can we leave you with a long-lasting, smelly reminder of our encounter, but we are also known carriers of rabies.

Take a close look at our footprints below! Can you unscramble the letters to guess who we are?

Fall foliage update!

Most of our mountain spots will head past their prime color by this weekend.

Just a heads up: missing the peak doesn't mean the colors completely vanish overnight! You will still find some beautiful autumn shades out there.

If you are planning a trip to the park, go enjoy the remaining reds, gold and orange while it lasts!

Don’t forget to display your day or annual park pass/ check in through the app.

🎃 Did you know that Halloween can bring toil and trouble for birds?
Autumn is here, and while we’re decorating with gourds and ghouls, birds are navigating one of the busiest and most challenging times of year. Fall migration brings millions of birds through our neighborhoods, where they can encounter hazards including window collisions, artificial light, and toxic pesticides.
Help make your yard more treat than trick for birds this Halloween. Skip the fake spider webs outdoors, which can entangle birds and other wildlife. Treat your windows with decals, exterior screens, bird tape, or other methods that make glass more visible and reduce collisions. Avoid toxic garden chemicals, which can harm birds directly and reduce the insects and other food sources they rely on. And turn off unnecessary outdoor lights at night, which can disorient migrating birds and increase the risk of collisions.

Wild Wednesday!

This week, we’re taking a look at the American Kestrel, one of North America’s smallest falcons.

Did you know you can often tell males and females apart by their coloring?

💙 Males have blue-gray wings and a rusty-red back and tail, marked with a bold black band.

🤎 Females are more reddish-brown overall, with dark barring across their wings, back, and tail.

Both have the kestrel’s signature bold black markings on their faces, making this little falcon easy to recognize once you know what to look for!

Have you spotted an American Kestrel lately?
