Update: Hillside Avenue Vegetation Fire

As reported yesterday morning, Mill Valley Police and Southern Marin Fire District responded to a vegetation fire on upper Hillside Avenue on the night of October 13.

Over the following day, police and fire investigators worked together to determine the cause of the fire. Through their investigation, they identified a potential cause and a person of interest.

As a result of the investigation, a juvenile has been charged with violating California Penal Code § 451(d) (Arson: Property). Because the individual is a juvenile, no additional information will be released.

We would like to thank our community for the many calls we received regarding this incident and for their willingness to assist with the investigation. The partnership between our community and law enforcement plays an important role in helping us investigate incidents, identify those responsible, and hold them accountable. We appreciate the continued support and involvement of our community in helping keep Mill Valley safe.

Last night, Southern Marin Fire and Mill Valley Police responded to a vegetation fire on upper Hillside Ave. Thanks to their quick work, it was contained, and we’re grateful no one was hurt. This is the second fire in that area in two months, and both are under investigation.

If you saw anything or have camera footage from the area, please call us at (415) 389-4100. Let’s keep our hillsides safe: report smoke or suspicious activity right away.

🎃Halloween Night Street Closure🎃

Planning to celebrate Halloween in Sycamore Village or live in the area? Please be aware that streets within the neighborhood will be closed to traffic from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Halloween night.

MVPD will be on scene to help keep trick-or-treaters safe. Streets may reopen earlier as pedestrian traffic begins to slow down.

Residents who need to leave or return home during the closure are encouraged to plan ahead.

Congratulations to Sergeant Josh Longoria on completing the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI)!

After eight months of training, coursework, and leadership development, Sergeant Longoria successfully completed a demanding program designed to challenge supervisors and strengthen their ability to lead.

We are proud of Sergeant Longoria for reaching this milestone, the time and effort he dedicated to the program, and his continued development as a leader within our organization.

🚨Mill Valley Evacuation Drill🚨

Don’t forget to join us this Saturday, October 3, at 9:00 a.m. for a community evacuation drill.

The drill will focus on three evacuation zones:
-Scott Valley and Mill Valley Meadows Neighborhoods (MIL-E012)
-Alto and Sutton Manor Neighborhoods (MIL-E013),
-Kite Hill and Overhill/Escalon Neighborhoods (MIL-E021) .

Participating residents will receive an AlertMarin notification with instructions and practice how they would respond during a real evacuation.

Participation is voluntary, and ALL Mill Valley residents are welcome to participate.

Following the drill, stop by the Edna Maguire Elementary School parking lot for a Community Outreach Event, where participating agencies will provide emergency preparedness information and resources.

This morning, the Mill Valley Police Department joined the Southern Marin Fire District in a flag lowering ceremony in remembrance of the lives lost 25 years ago on September 11, 2001.

We honor the victims, their families, and the first responders who answered the call. Their bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
