NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
An NPR Best Book of 2025

In her compelling historical novel The Frozen River, Ariel Lawhorn draws inspiration from the life and diary of an 18th-century midwife who investigates a shocking murder that unhinges a small Maine community.

Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion, declaring the death to be an accident, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own. Over the course of one winter, as the trial nears, Martha doggedly pursues the truth. Her diary soon lands at the center of the scandal, implicating those she loves, and compelling Martha to decide where her own loyalties lie.

A vivid, exciting page-turner from one of our most interesting authors of historical fiction. –Kirkus

“Gripping . . . an edge-of-the-seat read.”—People

About the Book:
In Thunderstruck, Erik Larson weaves together the extraordinary stories of Hawley Crippen, an unlikely murderer, and Guglielmo Marconi, the obsessive inventor who helped make wireless communication a reality.
Set against the excitement and upheaval of Edwardian-era Britain, the book combines murder, romance, technological innovation, and one of history's most dramatic criminal chases. Larson's two narratives eventually converge on the North Atlantic in a gripping true story.
