We are aware of reports of a tragic incident involving a Millington Central High School student at Shelby Farms Park in Cordova that resulted in the loss of a young life, and we are heartbroken.
While we do not yet have all the facts, one thing is clear: a firearm had no place anywhere near our young people. Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States, something that sets our country apart from other developed nations. This should never have happened. A young life has been taken far too soon, and that is unacceptable.
We lift up in prayer the family, friends, and loved ones affected by this tragedy. At the same time, we are reminded that prayer must be matched with action. In the days, weeks, and months ahead, we will carry heavier hearts and a renewed focus on doing everything we can to listen to our young people and help ensure they have positive, safe opportunities right here in our community.
We have also engaged our community partners to help ensure resources are available for those grieving alongside this family and our community.

Each month, important public safety business is discussed at the City of Millington, TNโs Board of Mayor and Aldermen meetings. These meetings include updates on the work our officers are doing and the investments being made to keep our community safe.
The City has now begun posting video recordings of Board meetings online, giving residents another way to stay informed about whatโs happening in their community.
At this past meeting, the Board approved new, improved body worn cameras for our patrolmen, important tools that strengthen transparency, accountability, and evidence collection. In recent months, the Board has also supported significant purchases of new equipment and received a critical vehicle donation from Shelby County.
We appreciate the residents who take the time to stay engaged with their local government and support the work of your police department.

Whether itโs chicken waste material, debris from waste trucks, or even a Taco Bell cup, if you litter our streets, you will be held accountable."
