Get ready to start your engines, or should we say potatoes!

Millport Public Library is excited to announce our 1st Annual Potato Derby, happening Saturday, November 7, at 1 PM during the Stallion Street Fair in Downtown Millport!

This isn’t your ordinary race! We’re challenging kids to put their creativity, engineering skills, and problem-solving abilities to the test by turning an ordinary potato into a race car!

Here’s how it works:

Participants will design and build their potato race cars at home using their own materials. They’ll have time to experiment, test their designs, and make improvements before bringing their finished spuds to the Street Fair on race day!

We’ll have two racing divisions:

* Silver Tater: Ages 6–8
* Golden Spud: Ages 9–12

Each division will compete for its own championship trophy, with certificates awarded to all participants!

Registration opens Friday, October 23!

Participation is completely FREE! When registration opens, we’ll share the official race car specifications, building requirements, and competition rules so everyone knows exactly how to prepare their spuds.

The Potato Derby is more than just a race. It’s a hands-on STEM challenge that encourages kids to explore science, engineering, mathematics, creativity, and critical thinking while having fun!

Start thinking about your designs, because we’re looking for the fastest spuds in South Lamar!

Our prize box got a SERIOUS upgrade!

Remember our prize bucket from Summer Reading? Well, it officially needed a bigger home!

What started as a simple way to encourage kids to read during the summer has turned into something we’re keeping year-round, and we couldn’t be happier about it!

Our new prize cart has 20 drawers ready to be filled with all kinds of goodies for our young readers!

The best part? Kids can continue earning tickets by reading and returning their library books, then use those tickets to pick prizes.

We love seeing how excited the kids get about earning their tickets, but what we love even more is seeing them excited about READING!

More reading. More tickets. More prizes!

Stop by Millport Public Library, check out some books, and start earning those tickets!

Two Libraries, One Community!

Millport Public Library and Kennedy Public Library teamed up tonight for some library outreach at the South Lamar Pink Out Game!

Since both libraries serve the South Lamar community, we thought this would be a great opportunity to work together, promote our services, and get more people connected with their local libraries.

Throughout the evening, we spoke with 85 people about what our libraries have to offer and signed up over 20 new library patrons!

And the best part? Everyone who signed up for a library card received one for BOTH libraries! That means even more books, resources, and opportunities available to our community.

Our Teen Advisory Board (TAB) was also on hand to help! While we visited with people at our table, our teens took outreach into the stands, talking with fans about the library and helping spread the word about our programs and services. It’s always great seeing our teens take an active role in promoting their library!

We loved getting to visit with everyone tonight, answer questions, and share a little about everything happening at both libraries.

Two small-town libraries working together to make a bigger impact!

A special thank you to Coach Harper and South Lamar School for welcoming us and allowing us to set up during tonight’s game. We appreciate the opportunity to connect with our community outside the library walls!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, and a special thank you to our TAB volunteers for helping make tonight such a success. We look forward to seeing some new faces at both libraries!

Today we read Creepy Crayon! by Aaron Reynolds, and then our little readers got to create some creepy crayons of their very own!
Armed with scissors, glue sticks, and plenty of silly eyes and mouths, our kiddos got busy giving their crayons some serious personality! 😂🎨 From happy crayons to mischievous-looking ones, no two turned out quite the same!
One of our favorite things about Tales for Tots is watching those little imaginations take over. Give everyone the same supplies, and you never know what they'll come up with! ❤️
Thank you to all the families who joined us for another fun Thursday morning at MPL! We love seeing our littlest readers get excited about books and bringing stories to life through crafts.
