We had a great Fungi Walk on Saturday! Many thanks to Colleen Bellows Brown and Megan Winder of NH Mycological Society for leading our explorations and sharing their knowledge. I learned a lot, such as: if you think you find a honey mushroom, check the color of the spore (should be white) -- you can sometimes see the color of the spore deposited by one mushroom on top of another, where honey mushrooms crowd together.
At the end of the day, Megan and Colleen discussed our finds then invited us to throw the mushrooms back to compost in the woods.
Thanks to Jim Pollard for some of these photos.

The woods are full of fungi! Recent rains have brought the mushrooms out so I expect we'll have great success in our hunt for them this Saturday. We still have a few more spaces for participants at our Fungi Walk -- email us if you want to join the fun: [email protected]
Thanks to Callie Amick for these photos!

The rains have brought out the mushrooms! I found these tasty shrimp of the woods (Entoloma abortivum) mushrooms this morning, which parasitize honey mushrooms (Armillaria spp.). Be sure to sign up for the guided fungi walk Saturday, Oct 3rd at 10am. Limited space.

And just a reminder, never eat mushrooms unless you are 100% positive on their identification.

You may know our local ornithologist Scott Weidensaul, who leads hawk watches for MCC and MMRG. He has a new book, Return of the Oystercatcher, which he talks about with the hosts of NHPR's Something Wild. Take a listen!

The team recently sat down with author and naturalist Scott Weidensaul to talk about his latest book The Return of the Oystercatcher: Saving Birds to Save the Planet. His new book explores the recovery efforts that are not only preventing declines in bird populations but are helping them to thrive.
