Join the Milton House Museum this Saturday, October 24th, beginning at 6:30 pm, for selected readings from Gothic Novels, performed in our local cemetery. The event will feature readings from 5 Gothic Novels: Frankenstein, Dracula, The Woman in White, Jane Eyre, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Below is a portion of the selection from the Gothic Novel Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, that will be read on Saturday night:

I started from my sleep with horror; a cold dew covered my forehead, my teeth chattered, and every limb became convulsed; when, by the dim and yellow light of the moon, as it forced its way through the window shutters, I beheld the wretch—the miserable monster whom I had created. He held up the curtain of the bed; and his eyes, if eyes they may be called, were fixed on me. His jaws opened, and he muttered some inarticulate sounds, while a grin wrinkled his cheeks.

He might have spoken, but I did not hear; one hand was stretched out, seemingly to detain me, but I escaped and rushed downstairs.

I took refuge in the courtyard belonging to the house which I inhabited, where I remained during the rest of the night, walking up and down in the greatest agitation, listening attentively, catching and fearing each sound as if it were to announce the approach of the demoniacal co**se to which I had so miserably given life.

the Milton House Museum this Saturday, October 24th, beginning at 6:30 pm, for selected readings from Gothic Novels, performed in our local cemetery. The event will feature readings from 5 Gothic Novels: Frankenstein, Dracula, The Woman in White, Jane Eyre, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Below is a portion of the selection from the Gothic Novel "The Woman in White" by Willkie Collins, that will be read on Saturday night:

“Yes, yes. That will do for me. I’m going that way—I’m going that way.” She spoke with breathless eagerness and pressed by me into the cab.

I had assured myself that the man was sober as well as civil before I let her enter the vehicle. And now, when she was seated inside, I entreated her to let me see her set down safely at her destination.

“No, no, no,” she said vehemently. “I’m quite safe, and quite happy now. If you are a gentleman, remember your promise. Let him drive on till I stop him. Thank you, oh! thank you, thank you!”

My hand was on the cab door. She caught it in hers, kissed it, and pushed it away. The cab drove off at the same moment I started into the road, with some vague idea of stopping it again, I hardly knew why, hesitated from dread of frightening and distressing her, called, at last, but not loudly enough to attract the driver’s attention. The sound of the wheels grew fainter in the distance, the cab melted into the black shadows on the road, the woman in white was gone.

He looked at me, and his face was full of anguish.

“Jane, you have seen the truth. You know now why I have been driven to desperation.”

I stood silent. I could neither speak nor weep. All my hopes had been destroyed in a single morning, and the man I loved stood before me, a stranger.

I returned to my room alone.

The future stretched before me, dark and uncertain. I had loved Mr. Rochester with all my heart, but I could not become his wife.

And so, at Thornfield Hall, beneath its darkened roof and behind its locked doors, the secret that had haunted the house was revealed.

Victorian Cemeteries Were Places for the Living, Too

When we think about historic cemeteries, we often think of them primarily as places to bury and remember the dead. But in the 19th century, Americans increasingly viewed cemeteries as places for the living to gather, reflect, and spend time together.

Beginning in the 1830s, the Rural Cemetery Movement transformed the American cemetery. New cemeteries were intentionally designed as beautiful landscapes, with winding paths, trees, gardens, sculptures, elaborate monuments, and peaceful places to sit. Families visited to tend graves and remember loved ones, but cemeteries could also serve as destinations for walks, quiet reflection, and community gatherings.

This changing relationship with cemeteries coincided with another defining aspect of Victorian culture: a fascination with death, mourning, memory, mystery, and the supernatural. These themes became central to the Gothic literature of the era, from haunted houses and mysterious strangers to lost love, grief, and encounters with the unknown.

That makes the cemetery a fitting setting for our upcoming Gothic Novel Reading Event at the Milton House Museum.

Join us as we gather in a historic cemetery to hear selections from some of the great Gothic novels of the 19th century—and experience the stories in a setting that would have been familiar to the people who first read them.

Sometimes, understanding where people experienced history can help us better understand the history itself.
