Today was The Fourth Annual Emergency Gun Violence Summit, hosted by the 80% Coalition and Forward Latino—the largest gun violence prevention event in Wisconsin.

To those that attended, I want to give my deepest gratitude. You are the pioneers of solutions and vessels of action in the community. Gun violence is devastating and it cannot be overcome alone. It takes everyone; first responders, faith-based organizations, non-profits, youth, educational institutions—everyone. It is urgent in our city, our state, our nation. So, we will not stop advocating for gun reform legislation from our state and federal legislation and we will not stand idly by in our communities. We will continue this fight, together.

We cut the ribbon today at Northwoods Apartment in the Harambee neighborhood after a multi-million dollar renovation. Local and state governments had a hand in bringing new life to this 72 unit development. Alderwoman Milele Coggs and city departments played important roles in making this happen. It's great news for the Milwaukee residents who live here.

Too often, landlords neglect their properties and that neglect can create safety issues. The files I signed today, will give inspectors from the Department of Neighborhood Services an additional tool to promote safety. In a designated area, inspectors can knock on the door of a residential property and ask the tenant if they can proactively inspect for habitability violations. A formal complaint is not required, and this takes the burden and risk associated with reporting off the shoulders of renters.

State law has limited the ability of our inspectors to do this type of safety investigations. There is one exception, and that is the policy we are accessing today.

In a designated neighborhood with chronic problems, the city can more actively look for violations now. Unsafe electrical issues, serious plumbing problems, or lead paint dangers will be able to be identified earlier.

With community support and neighborhoods groups assistance, we are putting attention where it is needed deeply, in the Uptown Neighborhood, based on data showing the highest levels of habitability complaints in that our city.

This initiative runs on the passion of the community. I must thank Reclaiming Our Neighborhoods for their support and Alderman Stamper who made these files possible through his sponsorship. I look forward to the collaboration between the community and city, helping neighbor’s achieve the safe home conditions every renter deserves.

It was a pleasure to welcome the Chiba Japan Delegation to City Hall today. Chiba has been a sister-state to Wisconsin since the 1990s, provided a valuable avenue for cultural exchange and international cooperation between our regions. I’m deeply honored by their presence. I enjoyed learning in particular about the Chiba Prefecture Mascot, Chi-Ba Kun, who, when viewed from the side profile, has a body shape which outlines the exact geographic shape of Chiba Prefecture on a map.

I’m grateful to the members of the Chiba Goodwill Delegation, which included Nagareyama Otakanomori High School Dance Group, representatives from the Chiba Government and Wisconsin Chiba Association, as well as the Wisconsin Serbian Community hosts, Alderman Stamper, who chairs of the Sister Cities Committee, and every other guest that took part in this special visit. I hope each of our visitors enjoys their visit and makes lasting friendships and memories here.

The creation of City Budgets are long and feel complicated. Here are some of the important things to know.

The budget process officially begins in April. In September, Mayor Cavalier Johnson released his Executive Budget and presented it to the Common Council. Then, it went under review.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s budget prioritizes investments in local roads, housing, and public safety and crime reduction.

Roads have the largest proposed investment yet, with some of investments including roadway repair equipment and $4 million more in high impact paving than in 2026.

This year, Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s worked diligently to engage residents about their priorities and used their feedback to help build the budget.

That included the largest formal survey in recent memory, which had thousands of responses from every aldermanic district and zip code in the city.

Today is the next part of the long process of creating and passing the 2027 City Budget. The Joint Public Hearing is October 5, at 6:30 PM in the Common Council Chamber. It is streaming live at Milwaukee.gov/CityChannel or Channel 25 on Spectrum.

Those that wish to provide oral testimony must attend and register on the day of the hearing. Reasonable accommodations are provided upon request at 414-286-3475 or [email protected].

You can also learn more about the budget by visiting engage.milwaukee.gov/budget.

Today two file signings, sponsored by Alderman Stamper, brought the incredible people of Metcalfe Park to City Hall. One creates a Neighborhood Investment District which will allow improved abilities for the community to fund and manage local investments. The other will change zoning in order to allow neighborhood-serving commercial uses and mixed-use programming for the Metcalfe Park Liberation Hub. These changes are happening because of resident based community organizing focused on collaboration. I signed these files because I believe in and support strong and unified neighborhoods where people can look out for each other and utilize resources to build the future they envision for generations to come. Thank you to Alderman Stamper and the people of Metcalfe Park.

Today people showed up loud and proud at City Hall to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. We were able to recognize the organizations, civil servants, and community that work with determination to lift each other up. These events, which celebrate Milwaukee’s diversity, are what truly breathe life into government. The warmth, life, and love of the Hispanic community inspires me deeply. Thank you to our City’s Employee Resource Group, Avanzando, for their dedication to organizing this event.

On his way to attend the G20 Trade Ministerial hosted in Milwaukee, Italy’s Ambassador, Marco Peronaci, joined me this morning at City Hall along with Chicago Consul General Mario Alberto Bartoli, and UW-Milwaukee Professor Simonetta Milli. I deeply appreciate the introduction with Ambassador Peronaci and our discussion of the avenues of cooperation between the Embassy, the Consulate General in Chicago and the City of Milwaukee.

Global representatives from the world’s largest economies have been gathering here to discuss commerce between nations. Milwaukee is the proud host of this international gathering and we look forward to stronger relationships abroad in the future because of it.
