Did you know??

LeVar Burton, the longtime host of Reading Rainbow, spoke at Stanford this May and summed up why reading matters in a few sentences.

He said: "If you're a reader for life, then you can self-educate. You are - by my definition - free. Because no one can imprison your mind. Or your imagination."

He also said the goal of Reading Rainbow "was to take a child who could read and turn them into a reader for life." In kindergarten we are right at the start of that road. Some of my friends are still figuring out which way the book opens. The love of it has to come first, and the rest follows.

He called teachers and librarians "my favorite people on the planet," which, fair.

What book turned you into a reader?

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month💜

As DVAM begins, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what this month means to us and what it means to be part of a community committed to creating change.

This October, join Sojourner and the greater Milwaukee community as we stand with survivors and work toward a future free from domestic violence. Change happens when we come together. By learning, raising awareness, supporting survivors, and taking action, each of us has a role to play in building a community where everyone can live free from domestic violence.

Explore this year’s DVAM programming at familypeacecenter.org/dvam-2026/ and find a way to turn awareness into action!
