Celebrating Lloyd Barbee's Legacy: Historical Marker
October 3rd was the day Lloyd Barbee Montessori School choir students joined Mayor Cavalier Johnson, Lloyd Barbee's daughter, Daphne Barbee-Wooten, Alderman Stamper, County Supervisor Cogs-Jones, and Dr. Clayborn Benson of the Wisconsin Black Historical Society for the unveiling of the Lloyd Barbee Historical Marker near 21st and Barbee streets. Attorney Lloyd Barbee led the charge to desegregate Milwaukee's public schools.
Our students represented Lloyd Barbee Montessori School beautifully with their performances of the "Black National Anthem" and "Stand Up" led by our music teacher and paraprofessional, Ms. Sha. Their voices were absolutely stunning and brought much pride and joy to everyone in attendance. We could not be prouder of our students for their confidence, talent, and professionalism as they represented our school and honored the legacy of Lloyd Barbee.

Lloyd Barbee Montessori School hosted reading instruction training to the school district's Montessori primary and lower elementary teachers and paras. The schools will use the Montessori Reading Acceleration Pathway (MRAP) for reading instruction. This is Lloyd Barbee's third year using MRAP, and it has been proven to improve students' reading skills. We look forward to what this year will bring!

Our all day Primary students recently visited the Urban Ecology Center, where learning came to life in the natural world.

Through exploration, observation, and hands-on experiences, students connected with their environment in meaningful ways. They asked questions, noticed details, and engaged with nature using all of their senses—building curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Experiences like these support the development of the whole child—encouraging independence, responsibility, and a sense of stewardship for our environment.

💚 There is so much to learn when we step outside.
