Don Lewis – “Client of the Week.” October 5th -9th.

Don was born in Canada, and his family moved to Deridder, Louisiana, shortly after his birth! He lived in Ringgold, Louisiana, two and a half years, and then moved to Minden, and now he makes Minden his home.

He served in the armed forces in Vietnam and is a very proud veteran to have served his country.

For many years he was in law enforcement. He has also worked for the State Park System, including seven years at Lake Claiborne.

He has been attending the Council on Aging for several years and enjoys the fellowship time with everyone and really enjoys the meals. He loves coming each day to be a part and says, “It is a great place to come.”

Congratulations for being our “Client of the Week."

A Little Thought

What is Worry?

It is a state or a condition of mental anxiety or distress, or a source or cause of mental anxiety or distress. So, in essence, there has to be a cause or a reason, if you will, that produces that condition of worry, and the condition itself is the cause of much of our worry. So, in conclusion we can worry about something that causes us to worry, or we can worry about something that may not even exist that creates worry. Sounds confusing, doesn’t it?

Here are some helpful hints to try and reduce worry.

*Make sure that your actions are based on facts rather than emotions.
*Control the variables you can control,
*Seek wise counsel before jumping to conclusions,
*Learn from past experiences,
*Exercise faith in the process,
*Take a relaxation break, switch up your routine,
*Write down a plan for what you would do if a particular thing does happen....think ahead.
*Recognize triggers that cause you to worry…make proactive decisions to avoid or amend these triggers,
*Use breathing techniques!

These are certainly not exhaustive hints, but maybe they can help us to combat “worry!’ After all, some things we tend to worry about never happen!

Take a break and come see us at the Webster Parish Council on Aging. Take one of those relaxation breaks with a game of bingo and a good meal.

Congratulations, Eretta Talley, our “Client of the Week.” September 28th – October 2, 2026

Eretta, one of seven was born in Bogalusa, Louisiana. She spent most of her childhood near Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She moved to Minden at the age of 14.

She attended Minden High School for one year before moving to Texas!

In 1979, she returned to Minden because her husband liked the surrounding areas. She has been here since then.

In 1989, she began to work at Dr. Hines office in Minden and studied to become a Medical Billing Specialist. She had that position for several years and has worked in several doctor’s offices in the area. She retired after twenty-five years. Even though the coding and billing changes came often, she found her work challenging and rewarding for her; especially after the loss of her husband! It kept her busy.

She has been a member of the Council on Aging a little over two years and really enjoys coming as often as she can. She loves to play Bingo and has made many friends while attending. She also enjoys bowling, crocheting, and fishing.

Eretta said, “It is always good to walk in and see people smiling and greeting you.” She truly enjoys the fellowship.

Thanks for being a faithful attendee, Eretta!

Our “Client of the Week” is Joanne Johnson Combs! September – (21st- 25th)
Congratulations, Joanne!

Joanne was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in the Confederate Memorial Hospital.

Minden has always been her home.

She graduated from Minden High School and is celebrating her 50th reunion this year!

She attended Commercial College in Shreveport, to study
secretarial work.

Joanne worked at two local caregiver companies: First Name Basis, and Joyful Days, here in Minden! She also worked in the House-keeping department at Minden Medical Center, and did volunteer work in the Radiology department.

Joanne is mother to two girls and has two grandsons and four great grands! She has played an active role in their lives. All the boys played football, her favorite sport as well. She loves the game almost as much as they do.

She has been attending the Center for the past year and a half. She loves making friends and really likes to play bingo.
She says, "If I win, it’s ok…If I don’t it’s ok. I just like to see the smiles on the faces of those who do win.”

"Client of the Week" for September 14th - 18th is Charles Ledbetter

Charles Ledbetter was born in Atlanta, Georgia.

He joined the U.S. Army and served his country for twelve years where he became an NCO Staff Sargeant.

While still in Georgia he met his wife and they moved to Minden eleven years ago. Minden is home for him now.

He has had several jobs in construction, various jobs in the military and enjoyed truck driving. He drove cross-country eighteen wheelers for over three years and ended up with about 30 years of driving all together.

He loves music and enjoys fishing. He just bought a boat and is looking forward to getting out on the lake. He also likes the holidays and the parties we have at the Council on Aging.

Charles has been coming to center – for the past six years, “on and off!” “It gives me something to do,” he said.
He likes playing bingo and talking to all the people and listening to the “wild stories” they tell.

Congratulations, Charles.

Client of the Week: (September 7th - 11th) Marvin Herrington.

Our “Client of the Week,” Marvin Herrington, was born in Minden. He graduated from Minden High School, and after attending college, he worked in several general labor positions. He was also employed in the funeral industry and worked off-shore for several years.

He said he had driven everything from tanks in the service, to eighteen wheelers, and buses. But his favorite job was driving for the Council on Aging in Bossier City for three years, and twelve years with Community Service here in Minden. He enjoyed meeting new people.

Marvin has attended the Council on Aging for two years, and enjoys the meals, and especially being around other seniors.
He said, “I really enjoy coming because, I get Out of the House!”
He also really enjoys calling bingo. He says his favorite part is seeing the faces of our seniors when they are just one number away from winning. He says they get so excited.

Thank you, Marvin, for being a faithful client here at the Council on Aging.

A Little Thought
In the state of Louisiana, Elderly Protective Services (EPS) is responsible for investigating reports of elders aged 60 and above who are at risk due to abuse, neglect, exploitation and extortion.

Abuse:
In law, “abuse” generally means an intentional act that causes harm, injury, or suffering to another person, including physical, emotional, sexual, financial, or legal misuse of authority.

Neglect:
The state or fact of being uncared for:
The action of not taking proper care of someone or something!

Exploitation:
The action or fact of treating someone unfairly in order to benefit from their work: The action of making use of and benefiting from resources; The fact of making use of a situation to gain unfair advantage for oneself!

Extortion:
The practice of obtaining something, especially money, through force or threats!

All of these are under the umbrella of abuse and there is never a reason for anyone, especially a senior adult, to be abused!
And it should definitely be reported if abuse is suspected or observed.

In Louisiana, suspected elder abuse can be reported to the Louisiana Adult Protective Services (APS) or the National Elder Abuse Hotline, and help is available through the Eldercare Locator and the U.S. Department of Justice’s Elder Justice Initiative.
