Check our website for event information. Huston - Dr. John. D. Brumbaugh Nature Center was established thanks to a gift from Dr. John D. Brumbaugh. Dr. Brumbaugh donated the 109 acres that had been his grandfather's farm to then Mount Union College in December of 1986. The farm, located in Washington Township, Stark County, Ohio included old growth and second growth forest and a large bank barn. Dr. Brumbaugh also established a generous endowment to provide for the development of the area as a nature preserve and educational facility. The property was named The John T. Huston - Dr. John D. Brumbaugh Nature Center, in honor of both Dr. Brumbaugh and his grandfather, John Huston. It was Dr. Brumbaugh's wish that the area be used as a nature preserve for the education and enjoyment of all people and the area be developed in such a way as to lead visitors into an exploration of the outside environment. Today the Nature Center provides support for numerous classes at The University of Mount Union, welcomes thousands of school students to environmental education programs, creates opportunities for hundreds of people to give of themselves as volunteers and offers a place for reflection and nature study for any who choose to visit.

Stark County Bird Quest took place on September 25 & 26. Seven teams explored habitats within the boundaries of Stark County to see how many species they could locate during the 24-hour quest. The teams tallied a combined total of 115 species of birds across 22 different locations this year, a respectable number given some habitat constraints for birds typically seen around the drawn down reservoirs (the reservoirs were flooded this year!).

The teams located 21 species of warblers heading south for the winter and 13 species of raptors, some of which may be headed south over the next few weeks as well. The most common raptors reported were Turkey Vulture and Red-tailed Hawk. All seven species of woodpeckers expected to be seen in Ohio were reported, and Red-bellied Woodpecker was recorded by each participating team.

A total of eight species were recorded by every team: Mourning Dove, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Blue Jay, American Crow, White-breasted Nuthatch, Gray Catbird, American Robin, and our state bird, Northern Cardinal.

Thank you to our partners at Stark Parks , Wilderness Center , and Canton Audubon Society for helping to facilitate Stark County Bird Quest. Please join us for the quest next year in September 2027!

REMINDER: The trails and parking areas will close at 5pm on October 8, 9, and 10. The Forest Listens: A Theatrical Walk is a sold-out show each night, so parking will be a necessity to accommodate the ticketed audience. Nature Center staff will be directing parking during the event to ensure that all ticketed audience members have a place to park to enjoy the show.

Thank you in advance for understanding the uniqueness of this event and the need to provide adequate parking for those attending the show.

Access to the trails and grounds will return to its normal schedule (sunrise to sunset) on Sunday, October 11. The Visitors Center will be closed on Sunday, October 11 so our small staff can recuperate from busy, late evenings during The Forest Listens. Visitors Center hours will return to normal next week.

HBNC Bench Views: October 2026
Welcome to the first HBNC Bench Views!

Each month, we'll highlight a different bench along our trails and invite you to visit the same location to experience the view for yourself.

This month's Bench View comes from the western bench beside the windmill on the North Woods property. October is beginning to transform the landscape. Meadows are filled with seed heads and late-season blooms, birds are taking advantage of an abundance of food, cornfields are turning gold, and the first hints of autumn color are appearing along the forest edge.

The photos in this post capture just a few of the things that caught our attention during a visit to this bench. What will catch yours?

Take a seat, spend a few moments observing, and share a photo or comment below. The view changes with the seasons, the weather, and the observer, making every visit a little different.
