📢 🚖Today, we did not get the votes needed to override Mayor Frey’s veto of Workers Drive Minneapolis.
I’m disappointed.
But I am not walking away from this issue - and I am certainly not walking away from the workers who asked us to stand with them.
We fought for rideshare drivers because their jobs matter. Their families matter. And the contribution they make to our neighborhoods and local economy matters.
At the same time, I understand that autonomous vehicles are coming.
We cannot stop technology from changing transportation, and we shouldn’t pretend that change isn’t happening.
👉🏾 But that does not mean Minneapolis should have no rules.
Companies operating commercial robotaxis on our streets should be licensed.
They should be regulated.
We should have clear standards for safety, emergency response, insurance, privacy, accessibility, data, and accountability when something goes wrong.
And the people whose livelihoods could be disrupted deserve a voice while those rules are written.
Today’s vote ended one ordinance.
It did not end our responsibility to govern this technology.
That is why we have already started the process of bringing new legislation forward.
I respect the colleagues who reached a different conclusion on Workers Drive Minneapolis. These are difficult questions, and reasonable people can disagree about the right approach.
But I also believe there is common ground here.
Whether you supported our ordinance or opposed it, Minneapolis still needs to answer a basic question:
What rules should companies follow before commercial autonomous vehicles become part of everyday life on our streets?
I intend to keep working on that question - with drivers, residents, my Council colleagues, state leaders, transportation advocates, and anyone else willing to come to the table.
We may not have won this vote.
👉🏾 But the responsibility to protect the public, establish accountability, and make sure working people have a voice did not disappear with it.
I fought alongside these workers before.
I stood with them through this vote.
And I will keep standing with them in whatever comes next.
✊🏾Progress should work for people, too.
