The first two sections of the restored ceiling were recently revealed, showcasing the completed plaster and paint work from the past several months. The ceiling is brighter, with renewed ornamentation and stenciling that enhances the space and highlights the intricate plasterwork.
Extraordinary details can be seen in the heart-shaped arches that frame each section. A multi-tone finish, sealed with a glaze, was used to bring depth and shine to these architectural features. The plasterwork above the stone was hand-sponged to mimic a stone texture using a three-color technique.
The first four of the 10 Auspice Maria medallions, meaning “under the protection of Mary,” around the perimeter of The Basilica ceiling have now been restored with impeccable detail.
Conservation technicians from EverGreene Architectural Arts have spent hours carefully restoring these intricate details. Work will continue on the next three sections, gradually revealing more of the ceiling’s renewed beauty and craftsmanship.
