Learn more: https://linktr.ee/mplsgardens It features hundreds of varieties of Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, Grandifloras, Climbers, Shrub and Miniature roses. Peak bloom period usually coincides with the Summer Solstice, with repeating blooms until frost. First built in 1929, and reconstructed in 1983, the Peace Garden features the earliest outdoor blooms in Minneapolis. The natural design provides a brilliant yet calm place to stroll, sit and meditate. The Annual/Perennial Border showcases bold color with four large beds bordered with lovely perennial-lined walkways. The Peony entrance, blooming in early June, is always jawdropping! The Perennial Trial Garden is maintained beautifully by volunteers from the Men's Garden Club of Minneapolis. Perennials are tested for three years on their performance in our challenging climate. The newest additions to Lyndale Park are the Butterfly and Hummingbird Gardens. Located just north of the Peace Garden, colorful perennials and annuals have been carefully selected to attract some of our favorite winged friends.

We heard our bald-faced hornet nest is getting a lot of attention online. Let us introduce you!

🏠Bald-faced hornets live in social colonies inside these distinctive paper nests. The nests have a single entrance always positioned low. (Can you find it in the photo?)
💪🏻While they might look tough with their black and white coloration, they are non-aggressive unless provoked. Staff roped off a perimeter around this nest to give them space to live safely and warn park users of their presence.
🍽️ These insects are beneficial predators. Their presence in the garden supports the management of pest insect populations. Bald-faced hornets are omnivores.
🔫 If intruders try to sneak into their nest, these insects can sq**rt venom from their stingers. The venom can cause temporary blindness for the intruder when it contacts their eyes.
🐝 They aren’t true hornets. Bald-faced hornets are actually a type of yellowjacket wasp and can sting repeatedly when threatened.
👑 Only the queen survives the winter. After feeding heavily to build up her fat reserves, she finds a sheltered location outside the nest to hunker down for the winter.

The Cardinal Morning Glory vines have begun to bloom! 🌺
Their brilliant red flowers are climbing across our handcrafted arch, built from repurposed willow and grapevines. It’s a beautiful example of how natural materials and living plants can come together to create something special. Stop by and see it in person! 🌿

Common names for plants are easy to remember but may be misleading, as is the case with the plant pictured here. This orange-red flower has a succulent-like texture and resembles a lily or even an orchid. Known commonly as “Blackberry Lily”, it is in fact an iris! The upright, sword-shaped leaves and botanical name, “Iris domesticata”, give its true identity away. This plant is a prolific bloomer that adds a splash of color in midsummer. The flowers close at night and open when the sun hits them in the morning.

Have you ever noticed a circle of mushrooms appearing in the grass? This natural phenomenon is called a fairy ring. Fairy rings form when underground fungal networks grow outward in a circular pattern, sometimes creating a ring of mushrooms or encouraging a ring of greener grass.

Nature has a way of adding unexpected details to the landscape. Keep exploring Lyndale Park—you never know what you might discover!
