In 1893 the wild bison were almost gone from the West. A Salt Lake businessman named John Dooly and his partners decided to save a few.

They bought 12 bison from a herd owner named William Glassman. There were four bulls, four cows and four calves. Then they set out to put them on Antelope Island, the biggest island in the Great Salt Lake.

There was no bridge or road out to the island. So the bison went by boat, a small sailboat run by George Frary, a homesteader who lived out there.

It was a rough trip. The grown bison weighed well over 1,000 pounds apiece, and when they shifted, the boat rocked so hard it nearly went over. But they made it across.

That was the start.

The herd grew on the island's open grass with salt water all around it. At times it got so big that bison were hunted or sold off to keep the numbers in check. In 1981 the island became a state park, and Utah took over the herd.

Today the Antelope Island herd runs between about 550 and 700, one of the oldest and biggest public bison herds in the country.

Every fall, riders on horseback round them up and drive them into the corrals for health checks, and people come out from all over to watch.

On Friday, three members of the Board of Estimate and Taxation (BET) released a letter expressing concern about a pattern of unsustainable and unaccountable spending within the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD). This pattern is resulting in massive overspending by the department and significant budget shortfalls for the City. We must contend with the reality that without meaningful reform to the MPD and the needed financial oversight of the department, we will continue to see budget shortfalls and property taxes will continue to go up as a result. Minneapolis residents work hard while property taxes keep increasing, it’s the City’s responsibility to make sure our tax dollars are spent and managed well.

The Minneapolis Board of Estimate and Taxation (BET) will take its final vote on the park tax levy this Wednesday, September 23.
