Celebrating National Forest Products Week!

From the forests we manage to the products we use every day, forests are an important part of our communities, economies, and everyday lives.

National Forest Products Week, October 18–24, is an opportunity to recognize the many people, organizations, and industries that contribute to the forest products sector and to highlight the many ways forest resources are thoughtfully managed and used.

At Dovetail Partners, we’re proud to work alongside partners across the forest and wood products sector, exploring the connections between forests, people, products, and responsible resource management.

Join us in celebrating the people, ideas, and products that connect us to our forests!

FACT Data Platform Beta Launches to Expand Access to U.S. Forest Carbon Data

The Forest Service and U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities have announced the Beta launch of the Forestry Analytics for Carbon Tracking (FACT) platform, a science-based platform that addresses the growing challenge and need for reliable forest sector carbon data at no cost to users.

The FACT Beta is a working release that will continue to evolve as the team refines the platform, expands its functionality, and incorporates new information based on user feedback. Kathryn Fernholz of Dovetail Partners serves on the FACT Platform Advisory Group, contributing to the collaborative development of the platform.

New research from Dovetail Associate Harry Groot!

Harry co-authored a new study exploring how different biochar feedstocks, when combined with organic nitrogen fertilizer, affect soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics. The research was conducted in collaboration with Virginia Tech and adds to ongoing work exploring the potential benefits of biochar in soils.

Dovetail Associate Mike Snyder served as the lead writer of the Stewardship Guide for Vermont Forest Landowners.

In writing the guide, Mike kept coming back to a simple idea: most Vermont forests are cared for by people making thoughtful, and sometimes difficult, decisions over time. The guide aims to meet landowners where they are and help translate their values into action, providing a clear and credible resource for forest stewardship.

The guide provides practical information and resources to help Vermont forest landowners understand, manage, and care for their forests, with topics ranging from forest health and wildlife to recreation and stewardship.

This Month In & About the Woods - September 2026

Each month, Dovetail team members are invited to share what they are seeing, doing, or experiencing in and around the woods, from personal land to public green spaces and places they visit.

Dovetail Associate Sarah Harris captured this stunning starry sky above the Yuba River near Bridgeport, California, while on a camping trip. A perfect reminder that time in the woods can offer a little perspective, a lot of beauty, and some pretty unforgettable views.

World Forest Week | September 28 to October 2

Forests give us so much more than trees! They’re all around us and connected to our everyday lives in so many ways, from the food we enjoy and the livelihoods they support to the communities they strengthen and the ecosystems they protect.

Forests create opportunities, support local economies, and help build a more resilient future!

This World Forest Week, we’re celebrating all the ways forests help us thrive and recognizing the people, communities, and organizations working together to help forests thrive for generations to come.

There’s so much to celebrate. Let’s celebrate all that forests make possible!

Burning on Private Lands in the Duluth Area and North Shore - Event Re-Cap

On August 19, Dovetail’s Abby Andrus and Julie Allen of Lake Superior Sustainable Farming Association hosted an informational session on using intentional fire for forest health, food production, and wildfire resilience. The event brought together landowners, fire officials, DNR, agriculturalists, and community members for a productive discussion about fire management and future training opportunities, including the potential to form a prescribed burn association.

Abby also recently spoke with Leo Babeu of Two Harbors Community Radio about the event, the role of fire in northern Minnesota ecosystems, and management options for private landowners. Listen to the interview here.

Environmental Justice and Ecological Care in Ramsey County Parks

By: Dovetail Intern Pablo Vicente Jiménez Sánchez

This project examines the relationship between ecological monitoring, invasive species, and environmental justice in Ramsey County, Minnesota. Using data on invasive species, parks, tree canopy, and surrounding communities, the analysis explores how monitoring efforts vary across parks and identifies areas where environmental justice considerations, lower tree canopy, and limited ecological monitoring overlap. The project provides a starting point for considering where future monitoring, restoration, native planting, and green-space investment may be most beneficial.

New Dovetail Commentary: Red Licorice, Diet Soda, and Nuclear Energy

Nuclear energy is having a moment in 2026, with growing interest in small modular reactors and renewed conversations around its potential role in a low-carbon energy future. But when we hear claims that nuclear energy is “carbon free” or that expanding nuclear is essential for addressing climate change, what questions should we be asking?

In Dovetail’s latest commentary, we take a closer look at the complexities behind the conversation, and explore what red licorice and diet soda have to do with nuclear energy.
