Happy Labor Day!

This day honors and celebrates workers and organized labor. It became a federal holiday in1894. During this period, at the height of the Industrial Revolution, Americans often worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks in unsafe conditions, often with young children (and those children themselves were often workers).

Labor unions in the US have been around since colonial times, but became a major force starting in the late 19th century and especially in the the 20th century. The organized efforts of labor unions brought about the eight-hour workday, the five-day workweek, worker's compensation, minimum wage laws, and protections against child labor. fair wages and job security.

The great Frances Perkins, FDR's Secretary of Labor (and the first female cabinet secretary in the U.S.) championed labor reforms and launched the Social Security program in the 1930s to help retired American workers to survive with dignity in their elder years

These reforms helped lead to the economic 'golden age' of America's post-war era starting in the late 1940s.

2 state-wide tornado alerts today!

Today for Severe Weather Awareness Week, we're focusing on all things tornadoes.

Did you know:
🌪️ Tornadoes can reach wind speeds over 300 mph
⏱️ Most tornadoes only last a few minutes
🏡 Even weak tornadoes can still cause serious damage. There are no "safe" tornadoes.

Day or night, tornadoes can wreak havoc. Be ready for watches, warnings or emergencies.

Reminder: Two tornado drills will sound statewide
- 1:45 p.m. Intended for schools and businesses
- 6:45 p.m. Intended for individuals

Outdoor sirens and weather radios will simulate a tornado warning.
