09/11/2026
25 years later, the memories of that day remain with us.
We remember the 2,977 innocent lives taken on September 11, 2001.
We remember the 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, and 37 Port Authority Police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to an unimaginable tragedy.
But the loss did not end that day.
Thousands of first responders, recovery workers, survivors, and others exposed to the events of September 11th have endured serious, life-altering illnesses in the years since. Many have lost their lives long after that day, and countless families continue to live with the consequences of September 11th.
As members of the fire service, we remember not only those who never made it home, but also those who did, and who carried the physical and emotional scars of September 11th for the rest of their lives.
As a Fire Chief, I am reminded every time I put on this uniform that we accept a responsibility greater than ourselves. We accept the responsibility to answer the call, to stand beside our brothers and sisters, and to run toward the danger when others need us most.
The courage displayed on September 11th was not simply something that happened that day. It is the same courage that continues to define the fire service today.
We remember those who were lost.
We honor the survivors.
We stand beside those who are still fighting.
We remember the families who continue to carry this loss.
As long as we wear this uniform, we will carry their memory with us.
Never Forget.
