Before Justice Jerod Tufte served on the bench, he spent years representing clients in private practice.

His legal career began at a large Phoenix law firm defending Intel Corp. and other computer chip companies in patent litigation matters. He later returned to North Dakota and established his own law practice in Steele, handling business law, real estate, estate planning, and patent matters.

He also served as general counsel to BEK Communications Cooperative and as Kidder County State's Attorney, where he tried criminal cases before juries.

That experience matters.

Justice Tufte understands the work of an attorney, the responsibilities of a trial judge, and the decisions entrusted to our state's highest court.

Mr. Johnson asks voters to trust his technical skills to lead on court technology. How has he handled his own campaign website?

At 4:32 p.m. on October 9, the security certificate for johnsonforjustice.org expired. Until a new one was issued late that night (after people pointed it out to him in facebook comments) visitors got a full-page browser security warning instead of his site.

This is the second time. His certificate expired June 30 and was not replaced until July 11. Eleven days of security warnings. That replacement, valid for 90 days, is the one that lapsed Friday.

These certificates are free and can renew automatically. Keeping one current is the easy part. Running technology for a statewide court system that serves every county, clerk, and litigant, on a budget the Legislature sets, is far harder.

Mr. Johnson says the people responsible for court technology should have “no excuses.” Twice now, his own campaign has failed at one of the simplest tasks in website upkeep. Voters may fairly hold him to the standard he sets for others.

Too many North Dakotans struggle to find or afford legal help, particularly in rural communities.

Speaking on Afternoons Live with Tyler Axness, Justice Jerod Tufte, who chairs a state task force on lawyer licensing, discussed the committee's recommendation for a paraprofessional model for legal services and compared the framework to the healthcare industry.
