🎃 Happy Halloween from Mishawaka Troop Town!

Want to hear something truly scary?

Tonight, while kids are out trick-or-treating, there are veterans in our own community who have no door to knock on. No porch light left on for them. No warm place to come home to when the candy runs out and the streets go quiet.

Imagine serving your country, then spending a cold October night wondering where you'll sleep. That's not a ghost story. For too many veterans, it's real life.

But here's the part that isn't scary at all.

Troop Town is more than a roof. It's a service-intensive program built to create real, lasting change. I'll be honest, it isn't for everyone. There are no free rides here. Our Guests put in the work every single day, and that's exactly why it works.

And nobody does that work alone. Every Guest has an incredible support team walking right alongside them, from case management to connections with the VA to a community that genuinely wants to see them win.

Our last open Tiny Home has a new Guest.

This week we welcomed a wonderful woman to Mishawaka Troop Town. When she walked in and saw her new home, she was honestly blown away. She kept saying she couldn't believe people would do this for her. That moment is exactly why we do what we do, and it only happens because of this community's generosity.

That also means every one of our Tiny Homes is full right now. But please hear this: full doesn't mean we can't help.

If you're a veteran who is struggling, or you know one who is, call anyway. We have resources and partners we can connect you with. And if nothing else, we'll listen. Sometimes that's the first step.

For the last several years in the Michigan Army National Guard, my job was helping Soldiers with problems nobody else could fix, or nobody knew how to fix. Pay issues. Benefits that fell through the cracks. Paperwork that sat on someone's desk for months while a Soldier's life waited on it.

Now I'm the Executive Director of Mishawaka Troop Town, and I help veterans who, through a series of unfortunate events, ended up without a place to live.

There's a myth that people who are homeless are lazy or mentally ill. Some are struggling with their mental health, and they deserve help too. But many of the veterans I meet got here through a job loss, a divorce, a medical bill, a landlord who sold the building, or one bad month that turned into a bad year. They served. They worked. Life stacked up faster than they could get ahead of it.

The work feels familiar. Someone has a problem, the system isn't solving it, and you roll up your sleeves until it's fixed. The difference is I'm on the other side of the fence now, and I don't have to navigate rank to get it done. It's just me, a veteran who needs a hand, and a Tiny Home with their name on the door.

The answer is no. Our Tiny Homes are here in Mishawaka, but we serve veterans anywhere in need. It doesn't matter where you served or where you grew up. If you wore the uniform and you're struggling, you're one of ours.

On this week's Mishawaka Troop Town Monday Podcast, I talk about why that matters, plus a quick rundown of who we are and what we do: safe housing, one-on-one case management, and a community of veterans helping veterans.

Today I was sitting with one of our guests at Mishawaka Troop Town when my phone rang.

The woman on the other end was worn out. Emotionally empty. She didn't know who else to call, so she called us.

Here's the hard part. Troop Town isn't set up to house families, so I couldn't offer her a Tiny Home. But I could offer her 20 minutes. I listened. I let her talk. Then I gave her the names and numbers of people who could help with what we can't.

I spent 30 years in uniform learning that you don't leave people behind. That doesn't stop because I retired.

So hear me on this:

If you need help, call me. Even if I can't help you directly, I have numbers you can call.
If you need a shower, come see me.
If you need someone to listen, come see me.
If you have nowhere else to turn, come see me.

You don't have to have it all figured out before you reach out. Just reach out.

🏡 A HOME IS WAITING FOR A VETERAN. 🇺🇸

At Mishawaka Troop Town, we believe that no veteran who served our country should have to wonder where they will sleep tonight.

We currently have a fully furnished tiny home available for a veteran experiencing homelessness.

And when we say home, we mean HOME.

Not a cot in a crowded shelter. Not a temporary place to sleep. A private, comfortable living space where a veteran can close the door, feel safe, and begin rebuilding their life.

❤️ Take a look at these pictures. This is what a fresh start looks like.

Our homes include a comfortable bed, living area, kitchen, private bathroom, and the everyday essentials that make a house feel like home.

But what makes Mishawaka Troop Town special goes beyond the four walls.

Our veterans work with a case manager to access the resources, benefits, and support they need to move toward independence and permanent housing.

We aren’t just providing shelter. We’re helping veterans reclaim their dignity, stability, and hope.

Somewhere in Michiana, there’s a veteran who needs this home right now. Maybe they’re sleeping in their car. Maybe they’re staying on someone’s couch. Maybe they’re just one more difficult night away from giving up.
