Benchmark Family Services, Inc. was established in 1994 and is a private, faith based, non-profit, therapeutic foster care agency.

Our goal is to provide stable, out-of-home placements for children in need, working with child welfare agencies to provide quality care to youth in the least restrictive setting possible. Our purpose is to provide stable and caring homes for youth in need of out-of-home care. Our mission is to advocate for children by ensuring opportunities for healthy physical, psychological and emotional growth and development in the most normal and least restrictive setting possible. To this end, Benchmark provides and coordinates programs and services in cooperation with referring child welfare agencies. Benchmark Family Services, Inc. services children who have been removed from their homes by the Department of Children’s Services (DCS) due to neglect, physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse suffered in their biological home. Most of the children served by Benchmark are experiencing behavioral, emotional, and/or mental health problems as a result of being abused or neglected and receive therapy either on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Additionally, some children are under the care of a psychiatrist and receive medications to manage their mental health needs. Why Choose Benchmark? Benchmark provides strong and consistent support to our foster care families. We provide:
Each foster care family with weekly contact with their case manager, including a minimum of two home visits per month
24 hour/7 day a week emergency cell phone access to a case manager in the event of a crisis
Respite care for foster children when needed
Premium financial compensation to support the needs of youth placed in the home

We value how hard our foster parents work to support the youths in their home and it's our job to be support for our parents. One practical support we provide is our 24/7 on-call support. No matter what time of day or night, one of our local staff will respond.

Respite is a HUGE need in the foster care world. If you're considering fostering, but not quite sure you want to take on a long-term placement yet, becoming a respite parent first allows you to gain some experience with foster kiddos and provide much-needed practical support for other foster parents.

Staff Spotlight

Lisa Ball has worked at Benchmark since 2018. Throughout her time with us, she has held multiple positions from Therapeutic Support Specialist to Licensing Home Compliance Specialist, to being our current Therapeutic Supervisor. Lisa has brought a wealth of knowledge and a deep desire to help others to each of the roles she's held. She is a veteran trainer, often prompting discussions from her own continued learning and understanding of trauma, and engages each of our families with empathy and grace. We lovingly call Lisa our "office mama" because she is the best listener, and she always helps guide our staff in the right direction to problem-solve without solving every issue for us. If you know Lisa, you know she always has time to chat, she loves her Tim Horton's coffee, and she's a very proud grandma! Our office is richer because of her!
If you’re considering becoming a foster parent, Lisa wants you to know that it's a hard, often thankless, job! While service providers are there to support, YOU are the ones having the greatest impact on the child placed in your home. You are “planting seeds” of safety, love, and connection. You may never see the fruit of those seeds, but you are doing the valuable work of planting!

We are excited to announce our next Foster/Adoptive/Kinship Parent Support Group at the Salvation Army in Niles. Our first meeting is this Thursday, October 15 from 5:30-7pm. And thank you to Michelle from Heart for Home for speaking. Hope to see you there!
