What a beautiful day to come together for OCD awareness! β˜€οΈπŸ’š

This past weekend, our Prevention Coordinator, Tim Kruse, represented Johnson County Mental Health Center at the Kansas City One Million Steps for OCD Walk at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park in Lenexa!

The event brought together individuals, families and community supporters to raise awareness, reduce stigma and remind those impacted by obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) that they are not alone.

We're grateful for opportunities like this to connect with our community, share mental health resources and support everyone on their journey toward recovery. πŸ’™

Last Friday, our Secure & Protect Initiative joined Gardner Police Department, Grace Baptist Church (Gardner, Kansas) and Up in Arms Kansas for Behind The Counter & The Badge: A Community Conversation on Mental Health and Fi***rm Safety.

Together, we explored recognizing when someone may be struggling, the importance of time and distance during a suicidal crisis, safe fi***rm storage and resources like 988 and The Armory Project.

A special thank you to our panelists, Ryq Farnow of Up In Arms Kansas, Chelsea Musfeldt of Johnson County Mental Health Center and Capt. Zach Roberts of Gardner Police Department, for sharing their perspectives and helping make these important conversations more approachable.

Attendees also had the opportunity to take home free STOPBOX fi***rm safety devices through a raffle.

Thank you to our community partners and everyone who joined us for an evening of connection, learning and su***de prevention.

Our hearts are with the students, families, educators and entire Bend, Oregon, community following the tragic school shooting.

When tragedies like this happen, the emotional impact can reach far beyond the community directly affected. It's understandable to feel sadness, fear, anxiety or helplessness, even from hundreds of miles away.

If you're struggling with the news, here are a few ways to care for your mental health, adapted from the American Psychiatric Association:

πŸ’¬ Talk about it. Share your feelings with someone you trust. You don't have to carry them alone.

βš–οΈ Find balance. While acknowledging what's happened, make space for the people, routines and moments that bring you comfort.

πŸ“± Take a break from the news. Staying informed is important, but repeated exposure to distressing coverage can increase stress.

πŸ’œ Care for yourself. Prioritize rest, nourishing meals, movement and activities that help you feel grounded.

Whatever you're feeling, you don't have to face it alone. Support is available 24/7.

It's Friday, the air is feeling a little more like fall, and we've got a few reminders for you, pumpkin! πŸŽƒπŸ‚πŸ§‘

As we head into the weekend, remember that you don't have to have everything figured out, be productive every minute or have a perfect week to be worthy of kindness and care.

Take what you need from these little reminders and carry it into the weekend. πŸ’›

Empowered women. Safer communities. Stronger together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us Tuesday evening for Empower H.E.R. (Heightened Awareness & Empowered Response)!

Hosted by Johnson County Mental Health Center's Secure and Protect Initiative in partnership with fi***rms instructor Suzie Tousey of Stagecoach Arms, this free training brought women together to build confidence, strengthen safety skills and promote responsible fi***rm ownership.

Participants explored fi***rm safety, situational awareness, safe storage practices and the important connection between mental health, su***de prevention and lethal means safety.

Safe fi***rm storage is more than a safety precaution. It's also an important part of su***de prevention and protecting the people we care about.

A special thank you to Suzie Tousey, our Secure and Protect Initiative team and everyone who participated in this important conversation!

Su***de prevention takes a village, and we're proud to be part of one that cares!

Yesterday, members of our team attended the 2026 Kansas City Community Su***de Prevention Symposium, "It Takes a Village," hosted by The University of Kansas Health System.

Our Director of Emergency Services, Rob MacDougall, participated in a panel discussion, "The State of Mental Health in Kansas: Challenges, Opportunities, and Community Solutions," sharing perspectives on the challenges facing our communities and opportunities to strengthen mental health care.

Joining Rob were Deputy Director Liz Worth, Director of Prevention and Community Relations Shana Burgess, and student Ellie.

The symposium brought together mental health professionals, advocates and community partners for a day of learning, connection and collaboration around su***de prevention.

Thank you to The University of Kansas Health System for bringing our community together for these important conversations. Su***de prevention is a shared responsibility, and building stronger connections is one way we can make a difference.

Mental Health Moment of Zen:

Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your mind is slow down, step outside, and simply soak in the beauty of nature. πŸ’š

Take a moment to let the peaceful sounds at Cedar Niles Park wash away the noise of the day.
