Today in Hattiesburg, we officially wrapped up the fall Certified Municipal Clerk Program!
This fall, our participants tackled everything from financial and risk management to community development, records management and communication.

We even added a little overtime. Through our partnership with the Mississippi Municipal League, municipal officials joined us for evening sessions on renewable energy and planning and zoning issues at each location.

Thanks to everyone who spent part of their fall learning with us. It was a great semester!

This week's International Association of Assessing Officers Course 400 class stretches far beyond the walls of the classroom.

We're bringing together in-person and virtual participants to learn, ask questions, share experiences, and strengthen the property tax system one lesson at a time.

Pretty cool to see a classroom that spans hundreds of miles.

Confession: whenever I travel, I check to see if there's a city council or local government meeting.

This week in Canada, I found one. I'm not sure if that makes me dedicated or just a local government nerd, but I always enjoy seeing how communities across North America approach local issues.

The funny part? Even 2,000 miles from Mississippi, the topics sounded pretty familiar: growth, roads, development, budgets, and residents who weren't shy about sharing their opinions.

Think all Mississippi municipal elections happen at the same time? Not quite.

Today, voters in Corinth are electing a mayor. That's because Mississippi has 20 special charter municipalities, and 12 of them follow election schedules that differ from most cities and towns.

So yes, it's possible to see a municipal election taking place even when most Mississippi municipalities aren't voting. 🗳️

Today is Election Day!

The City of Corinth Municipal General Election for Mayor is happening today.

Polls are open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
All city voters will cast their ballots at one location: the fire department bay at Corinth City Hall, 300 Childs Street.

Absentee voting has been strong, and a good turnout is expected today. Your vote counts. Please make your voice heard!

A sincere thank you to City Clerk, Brandy Smith and her deputy clerks for their hard work and dedication. Thanks to Alcorn County Circuit clerk, Crystal Starling for her expertise as well. It’s going to be a long day, and we appreciate everything you do to run a smooth election.

What’s the difference between Planning and Zoning?

If your city files 1099s electronically, this is the month to get your access sorted out.

Starting this year, 1099 filers have to use the IRS IRIS system instead of FIRE, and your old FIRE login does not carry over. IRIS requires its own Transmitter Control Code, and the application can take up to 45 days.

Three things worth doing now. If you have never used IRIS, apply for your TCC today. If you already have an account, log in and make sure it still works. And if the person who handles your 1099s has changed since last year, register the new filer before filing season.
