Integrated w**d management (IWM) is a strategy to prevent and suppress pests with a minimum impact on human health, the environment & non-target organisms. Focus is first on PREventing problems. Successful IWM practices include monitoring areas over time (especially places more susceptible to or recently treated for w**d invasion), identifying what w**ds are present, and choosing a combination of prevention & treatment tactics to keep w**d populations at acceptable levels.

Did you know there are actually several different types of biocontrol? Our work at MTBCP falls under the Classical Biocontrol category as all of our biocontrol agents go through a rigorous host-specificity testing before they get approved for field release. Have you tried any of the other types?

Success for biocontrol isn't just about getting agents onto w**ds 🏆Biocontrol success evaluates target w**d management, long-term ecological benefits, knowledge of how the biocontrol agent and w**d interact, spreading awareness to private landowners and public land managers, benefits to the economy, and long-term support from local and federal governments.

The density of a w**d infestation can be difficult to estimate, especially with a quick glance! We often use quadrats to estimate the percent cover of the target w**d by looking at what percent of ground within the plot that is covered by the plant species. What would you say each of these densities for these sites are just from photos?

Now live! Check out our YouTube channel to see 2 informative videos our crew put together this year.

#1) How to Conduct a Site Evaluation Video: https://youtu.be/zsN7hh6E3NA
A critical part of successful w**d biological control programs involves evaluating the current state of biocontrol agent populations at release sites. Biocontrol site evaluations are a quick way to inform management decisions and help answer the most common questions – Are biocontrol agents established at this site? Is the biocontrol agent collectible? Are release practices working? This video walks you through the biocontrol site evaluation protocol that assess current biocontrol populations at historic release sites or sites where biocontrol agent establishment is unknown. Site evaluations are appropriate for the most common established biocontrol systems in Montana – yellow toadflax (Linaria vulgaris), Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria dalmatica), leafy spurge (Euphorbia virgata), and spotted knapw**d (Centaurea stoebe).

#2) How to Collect Biocontrol Agents Video: https://youtu.be/GZyNzqGRXoc
This video walks you through the Montana Biocontrol Coordination Project’s Collection Guide. During this video we will briefly cover general biocontrol collection information including: how to determine if a site is collectable, when to collect biocontrol agents, how many insects are in one release, and how many releases are needed for a new site. Next, we will discuss specific collection procedures for the most common established biocontrol systems in Montana – yellow toadflax (Linaria vulgaris), Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria dalmatica), leafy spurge (Euphorbia virgata), and spotted knapw**d (Centaurea stoebe). If you are looking for specific species collection information, please view the segment concerning general collection information and then locate the video segment with your insect of interest.
