Yesterday October 4th just after 8 am the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department was requested for mutual aid by Morrill Nebraska Volunteer Fire Department for a haystack fire northwest of Morrill. MVFD responded with one truck and two personnel. Mutual aid was also provided by Lyman-Kiowa Volunteer Fire Department. The Seat(single engine air tanker) plane out of Chadron was also used to drop a line of fire retardant so the farmer could spread out the haystack without risk of the whole field catching fire in the warm and windy conditions the next coupleof days.

Yesterday September 18th at about 7:20am the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department responded to a four vehicle accident at the intersection of HWY 26 and Cook Oil Road. Due to extreme fog conditions this accident was extremely dangerous.
MVFD responded with five trucks and multiple personnel.
Thank you to all the other agencies that assisted with this accident.
Members of MVFD were frustrated with the large amount of unsafe driving that was witnessed during this incident. While responding to the scene our ambulance was passed by a vehicle at a high rate of speed while the ambulance had its light and sirens activated. Other members also witnessed multiple near collisions from vehicles driving dangerously fast for the weather conditions present at the time of the accident.
Nebraska State Statute 60-6,185 also known as the basic rule for speed states that drivers shall reduce speeds to a speed that accounts for the present and potential hazards on the roadway. When in severe fog conditions essentially everything on the road could be considered a hazard due to the extreme reduced visibility.
Nebraska State Statute 60-6,378 deals with the move over law in which vehicles are required to move over and reduce speed for vehicles on the shoulder. MVFD members witnessed countless vehicles who failed to move over for emergency vehicles that were staggered out to slow the flow of traffic approaching the accident scene until traffic could be redirected up Spring Creek Road.

The Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department asks that drivers use common sense when driving and obey traffic laws. Emergency vehicles should not be passed when their lights and sirens are activated and responding to an emergency. Drivers should use extreme caution and reduce speed when driving in adverse conditions as it is not just yourself that you are putting in danger but everyone else on the road too.
