Have you ever looked into the powder elevator for a 5"/38 caliber gun? You can at Battleship Memorial Park! Our curation team and our maintenance department got together and opened up an elevator feeding Mount 6! The powder case would always be sent up in the aluminum case you see at the bottom. The aluminum wouldn't spark and it protected the primer on the way up the elevator. We've displayed a brass case to make it clear to viewers what is being carried up. The armored elevator to the right provided projectiles to Mount 6.

During the Second World War the M4 Sherman was the mainstay of American armor. Its intended replacement didn't make its debut until the beginning of 1945. The M26 Pershing first saw combat on 25 February 1945. U.S. 3rd Armor had an M26 knocked out by a Tiger, though it was repaired and returned to service. Pershings were known to stand toe to toe with German tanks and were more than capable of taking them out using its 90mm gun. The Pershing went on the serve in the Korean War as well, though they were not used often as the North Koreans quickly realized their T34s were ill prepared to face the Pershing, with 90mm rounds often over penetrating the older Soviet design.

If you want to see an M26 Pershing make your way to Battleship Memorial Park!

The F/A-18 Hornet is a supersonic, twin engine, multirole fighter that entered U.S. service on 7 January 1983 with the U.S. Marine Corps, and then 1 July 1984 with the U.S. Navy. It comes in both a single and tandem seat configuration. It first entered combat with the Marine Corps on April 1986, when VFA-131, VFA-132, VMFA-314, and VMFA-323 of the U.S.S. CORAL SEA flew suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) missions against Libya for Operation Prairie Fire, and a strike on Benghazi as part of Operation El Dorado Canyon. Our F/A-18 took part in this first action! The Hornet became the backbone of U.S. naval air power, continuing to serve as the F/A-18E and. F/A-18F SUPER HORNETS, and E/A—18 GROWLER. It served valiantly in the Persian Gulf War and the War on Terror. Come see our Hornet in our Gulf War exhibit alongside a Tomcat, Eagle, Abrams, and Iraqi Type 69!

The U.S.S. ALABAMA and U.S.S. DRUM aren't the only place you'll find 40mm Bofors guns at Battleship Memorial Park! Take a look at our M42 Duster, a self propelled piece of armor packing twin 40mm guns! Based on the M41 platform, it was originally designed to act as a mobile anti-aircraft battery for the U.S. Army. but was replaced by the HAWK Surface to Air Missile (SAM) system. Due to poor low altitude performance of the HAWK the Army brought the M42 back out for Vietnam. Though there were a few early aerial kills, the North Vietnamese Air Force never materialized. It was quickly realized the Duster was an amazing ground support platform. Though dense vegetation could detonate the 40mm round if it had some room it was devastating in action.

Come to Battleship Memorial Park to see our M42 Duster!

The ABRAMS you see at Battleship Memorial Park wears the colors of Desert Storm.

However, it is actually an M1E1. What is an M1E1? E in this case means Experimental. This tank was part of trials to improve the M1 ABRAMS in the early 1980s. Many of the improvements made on the E1 made their way onto the M1A1 that saw service in the Gulf War. There were originally fourteen M1E1s built, less than five are on display.
If you want to see the ABRAMs come to Battleship Memorial Park!

⚓ Step Inside the USS DRUM!

Did you know? From the control room, the crew could manage diving, surfacing, and changing depth, while also operating essential equipment such as sonar gear, the master gyro compass, and various control panels.

Orders could also be sent directly to the engines, allowing the crew to navigate and maneuver the submarine beneath the waves.

Come explore the USS DRUM and discover what life was like for the brave men who served aboard her! ⚓

14 October 1944 was a particularly active day! ALABAMA refueled other ships and protected damaged ships leaving the area of Formosa Air Battle (Taiwan today). ALABAMA managed to shoot down three "Kates" and Jills" and damaged a fourth. During the attack G.H. Olson, S1c, was struck by a wave and washed overboard! He was rescued by the destroyer USS MORRISON (DD-560, a Fletcher class destroyer like USS KIDD Veterans Museum).
