UPDATE: Modesto Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Collision

On Friday, October 9, 2026, at approximately 8:49 p.m., Modesto Police officers responded to a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision in the 1100 block of Coffee Road. Two female juveniles were struck while crossing the roadway. Officers who were nearby at Downey High School arrived first and began CPR until medical personnel took over.

Both juveniles were transported to local hospitals. One later succumbed to her injuries; the other remains hospitalized in critical condition. The families have been notified.

The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the vehicle was driving south on Coffee Rd and struck the pedestrians as they were in a crosswalk in the roadway. The details of how the collision occurred are still under investigation. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. A Drug Recognition Expert evaluation found no signs of impairment.

Investigators are continuing to review the scene and seek potential surveillance video. The investigation remains ongoing.

10/12/26 UPDATE: Friday’s collision on Coffee Road has left our community grieving. Those who lost their lives have been identified as Camila Magallon Mendoza, 16, and Nicole Alexandra Coltzojay, 14.

We are thinking of their families, friends, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. No words can ease what they are going through, but we hope they know our community is holding them close.

We remind everyone to use caution on our roadways and make traffic safety a priority. Whether driving, walking, or cycling, staying alert and following traffic laws can help prevent tragedies like this. Keeping our roads safe is a responsibility we all share.

Modesto, Calif. – October is National Pedestrian Safety Month and the Modesto Police Department would like to remind drivers to always take extra precautions to help protect pedestrians.

On average, a pedestrian is killed every 72 minutes and one is injured every 8 minutes in traffic crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In California, 1,106 pedestrians were struck and killed in 2023.

“In Modesto, walking should always be an easy and safe option for getting around,” Sergeant Darien Wilson said. “We want to make sure that people walking are safe. We urge drivers to take the time to look out for people. Small actions, like slowing down, putting away distractions and yielding at crosswalks, can reduce crashes and serious injuries.”

Vehicle speed impacts people walking, who do not have the same protections as drivers and passengers. A difference of just 15 MPH (20 MPH to 35 MPH) significantly increases the likelihood that a person walking will be killed if struck by a vehicle.

To promote the safety of people walking, The Modesto Police Department will conduct a traffic safety operation on October 8th focused on the most dangerous driver behaviors that put the safety of pedestrians at risk. These violations include speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield and running stop signs or signals.

The Modesto Police Department offers these driving tips to keep everyone safe:

• Follow the speed limit, especially around people on the street, around schools and in neighborhoods where children are present.
• Use extra caution when driving in hard-to-see conditions.
• Drive sober.
• Always stop for people in crosswalks and avoid blocking crosswalks while waiting to make a right-hand turn.
• Avoid distractions such as texting or eating while driving. Keep your focus on the road.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Modesto Police Department encourages families and students to buckle up their helmets and lace up their sneakers for National Walk and Roll to School Day. This annual event celebrates the benefits of exercise and brings attention to the need for safe, accessible walking and biking routes.

“National Walk and Roll to School Day is a great opportunity to highlight pedestrian safety and advocate for safer routes for walking and biking to school,” Traffic Safety Unit Officer Alex Estep said. “This day underscores the importance of boosting physical activity and prioritizes the safety of the families in our community.”

While extra caution is always needed, with increased foot and bike traffic, it’s important to stay alert every single day. Drivers should be prepared to stop for school buses and children crossing the street, and always slow down in school zones.

The Modesto Police Department offers tips for students who walk, bike, or roll to school:
• Plan your route on roads with sidewalks or paths away from traffic. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible or ride your bike in the same direction as traffic as far on the right-hand side as possible.
• Use crosswalks, preferably at stop signs or signals. If there are unmarked crosswalks, cross at corners on streets.
• Always look left-right-left before crossing the street. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
• Watch for cars entering/leaving driveways or parking spaces. Never assume a driver sees you.
• Always wear a helmet when riding or rolling.
• Be visible. Wear bright clothing during the day, and wear reflective materials or use a flashlight when it’s dark.
• Stay alert. Don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes (and ears) off the road.

Schools are encouraged to register at walkbiketoschool.org as a way of tracking participation and showing support for active, healthy, and safe transportation.

The vehicle was occupied by two adult women and a 12-year-old child. All three were transported to area hospitals. First responders searching the damaged home located a woman beneath debris inside the residence. She lived at the home and was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. She was identified as Kathleen Erickson, 67.

Based on preliminary information and eyewitness accounts, it appears the driver experienced a medical emergency immediately before the collision, causing the vehicle to crash into the home. Investigators have not identified evidence of alcohol or drug impairment at this time.

Modesto Police Arrest Suspected Serial Bank Robber Within Six Hours of Downtown Robbery

MODESTO, Calif. – A coordinated investigation involving Modesto Police patrol, Real-Time Crime Center (RTCC) personnel, and detectives resulted in the arrest of a suspected serial bank robber within six hours of a downtown Modesto robbery. Investigators also linked the suspect to a similar robbery in Turlock two days earlier.

On October 2, 2026, at approximately 5:14 p.m., Modesto Police officers responded to the Bank of Stockton, located at 1302 J Street, following reports of a bank robbery. Investigators determined that the suspect, identified as Robert Vincent Mendez of Modesto, approached a teller and presented a note demanding money. Mendez obtained cash from the teller before fleeing on foot.

Mendez changed his appearance in a nearby alley, requested a ride through a local rideshare service, and left the city. Working with MPD’s Real-Time Crime Center personnel, patrol officers tracked his movements and located the vehicle. Officers conducted a traffic stop and learned the driver had recently dropped Mendez off.

Modesto Police detectives continued the investigation and obtained a search warrant for records from the local rideshare service that helped positively identify Mendez. Investigators also connected him to a September 30, 2026, bank robbery at a U.S. Bank in Turlock. Detectives linked the robberies through similarities in the suspect’s methods and distinctive tattoos.

Further investigative efforts led detectives to Chicken Ranch Casino in Tuolumne County. Detectives confirmed Mendez was on the property, coordinated with casino security personnel, and took him into custody while he was actively gambling.

Less than six hours after the Modesto robbery, Mendez was in custody. During his arrest, detectives recovered some of the remaining cash concealed on his person, which investigators were able to identify as taken during the robbery.

During an interview, Mendez admitted to committing both the Modesto and Turlock robberies. Investigators also learned that Mendez had a history of bank robberies in Oregon and Washington and had previously served time in prison. Mendez additionally claimed responsibility for other robberies previously unknown to investigators. Those claims remain under investigation.

This investigation highlights the effectiveness of coordinated police work and modern investigative technology. The combined efforts of patrol officers, RTCC personnel, detectives, law enforcement partners, and casino security resulted in the rapid apprehension of a suspected serial bank robber and the recovery of a substantial portion of the stolen funds.

Mendez was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on suspicion of bank robbery, commercial burglary, and possession of narcotics. The investigation remains ongoing.
