It doesn’t feel like work when you’re surrounded by the most amazing people. ❤️

Another fantastic NDACo Conference in the books! This year, we kicked off the conference with an incredible keynote speaker, Danny Adams. His presentation, “Laughter Is the Best Medicine,” was so uplifting and came at such a perfect time in my life. Sometimes, you hear exactly what you need to hear when you need it most. 🙃

From meetings and educational opportunities to celebrating each other’s accomplishments and awards, this conference was filled with so many meaningful moments. 🏆

Most of all, I’m grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with my fellow Recorders and Clerks from across the state. The friendships, support, laughter, and encouragement we share are truly something special. 🫶🏻

I’m heading home feeling inspired, grateful, and reminded of just how blessed I am to do what I do—and to do it alongside such amazing people. 🚙

⁉️ DID YOU KNOW?
❓What Does a County Recorder Actually Do?

📚 In Renville County, the Recorder’s Office is responsible for filing and preserving military discharge records, commonly known as a DD-214.

📄 A DD-214 is the official Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty issued by the U.S. Department of Defense when a service member leaves the military.

🇺🇸 These records are incredibly important to our veterans. They can be used when accessing benefits and services such as:

🏠 VA home loans
🎓 Education benefits, including the GI Bill
🏥 VA healthcare and disability benefits
💼 Veterans’ employment preferences
💰 Retirement and Social Security benefits
🕊️ Burial and memorial honors

💻 By accurately filing and preserving these records, we help ensure that our veterans can access the benefits they have earned through their service to our country.

⚠️ Serving our community means understanding the responsibilities entrusted to our local offices—and honoring the people those offices serve.

⁉️ DID YOU KNOW?
💻 What Does a County Recorder Actually Do?

✈️ In Renville County, the Recorder’s Office is responsible for processing passport applications. This includes verifying identification, examining citizenship documents, administering oaths, collecting fees, assembling passports with supporting documents, and submitting them to the appropriate passport agency.

🧳 To become a passport acceptance agent, one must obtain certification and complete annual training. This training consists of government-mandated instructional modules, practical assessments, and a final examination.

🌍 As the Facility Manager for the passport program, I have additional responsibilities, including overseeing daily operations, ensuring staff compliance with federal regulations, and preparing annual compliance reports. This role also requires participation in additional yearly training and examinations.

🏛️ I believe that understanding the functions of our local government enhances community engagement and connectivity.

❓DID YOU KNOW?
❗️What Does a County Recorder Actually Do?

💍 In Renville County, the Recorder’s office handles the duties of administering marriage licenses and officiating wedding ceremonies. Marriage licenses can be used in any county within the State of North Dakota, but depending on your residency, where you can obtain your marriage license may differ. A marriage license must be obtained first before any marriage ceremony is held for the marriage to be legally valid. After obtaining a marriage license, a couple must have a ceremony with an officiant and two witnesses for the marriage to be legal. As the Recorder, I can also perform wedding ceremonies, both inside and outside of the courthouse.

🏡 I believe the more we understand about how our local government works, the better connected we are to our community.

DID YOU KNOW?
What Does a County Recorder Actually Do?

Over the next several days, I thought it would be fun to share a little about the many responsibilities of the County Recorders Office.

When most people hear the word “Recorder,” they probably think of someone who keeps the county records, while that’s true but, there is SO much more to the job!

The County Recorder serves as the historian of the county land records, and the office plays an important role in keeping county government running every single day.

From recording deeds to mortgages, processing passports to issuing marriage licenses to preparing and maintaining accurate court records, the responsibilities cover a lot of ground!

So, I’m going to highlight one responsibility of the County Recorders Office and explain a little about why it matters to you, the taxpayer.

I believe the more we understand about how our local government works, the better connected we are to our community.
