California City High School has officially been designated a Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO) Partner High School!

This partnership creates a direct pathway to higher education, with enhanced admission considerations, dedicated mentorship, and significant financial aid opportunities. Cal Poly SLO will provide institutional funding and networking resources to help build a strong college-going culture at California City High School. Details for an upcoming campus visit with students, faculty, and families are being finalized.

Students will have access to:

• Targeted Admission & Outreach: Priority outreach and specialized admission consideration, supported by a designated Cal Poly university representative.

• Mustang Mentorship Program: High school juniors and seniors—particularly underrepresented students maintaining a 3.5+ GPA—will be paired with trained Cal Poly student mentors to navigate college applications, financial aid, and campus life.

• Cal Poly Scholars: High-achieving, low-income students from California City High School will receive automatic consideration for the Cal Poly Scholars program. Benefits include renewable tuition and fee coverage, technology credits, a dedicated residential community, and campus support.

• Priority Financial Aid: Students will receive priority consideration for specialized institutional awards, including the Partner High School scholarship, Green and Gold awards, and Education Equity scholarships.

• Micro-Scholarship Opportunities: Starting as early as ninth grade, students can use RaiseMe to track achievements, AP/IB courses, leadership roles, and sports to earn up to $2,400 in micro-scholarships.

“Today’s confirmation marks a major milestone for our school community,” said Katherine Notterman, Principal at California City High School. “This partnership opens doors to world-class higher education and provides our students with the financial, academic, and mentorship resources they need to thrive at the university level.”

The District, and specifically California City High School, was proud to host a meaningful September 11 remembrance honoring the nearly 3,000 lives lost and recognizing the extraordinary sacrifice of the first responders who answered the call that day. The event was intended to be—and remained—focused on remembrance, service, sacrifice, and our community coming together to honor those who were lost and affected by the horrific events of that day. Patriot Day is meant to be a day to reflect and honor.

Mischaracterizations have circulated claiming that a city representative attended the event expecting an invitation to speak, only to be turned away. That account is incorrect. While it was initially part of the program, it was decided that the event would be run by students and school staff as they had spent many hours preparing and practicing. This was not a city-sponsored occasion; rather, it was strictly a student-focused program designed to be run by and for the students. The District chose to maintain that focus. We had hoped that all of the adults understood that the day belonged exclusively to the students.

It is unfortunate that an event intended to honor the victims and heroes of September 11 has become the subject of political controversy. Attempts to assign political motives to the District, its Board, or the event detract from what the day was actually about. As a District, we do not get involved in politics or how the city manages itself.

The District remains grateful to everyone who participated and helped make the remembrance a respectful and remarkable tribute. Our focus remains where it belongs: honoring those who lost their lives, the first responders who made extraordinary sacrifices, and the enduring significance of September 11 to our nation and community.
