Good afternoon world of Facebook! Today, I received a message from our internal Kudos pathway that left me speechless. Anything I can say about it does not do it justice. Please join me in thanking David Kase and Artavious White for continuing doing an exceptional job in patient advocacy and overall solid patient care.
This message has been mildly altered to protect HIPAA related information. The Patient’s and Patient’s Family Member’s name has been replaced as well as any destination hospitals.
"A Heartfelt Thank You to David Kase & Artavious White. I want to take a moment to recognize David Kase and Artavious White for the care they provided to PATIENT on August **—but more importantly, I want them to know just how much that care meant to us.
PATIENT was not just a friend, she was like another mother to me. She was someone incredibly special, and when PATIENT FAMILY MEMBER called to tell me that he had called an ambulance for his mom, I instantly knew something was seriously wrong. There are moments when you hear something and just know. This was one of those moments.
When I looked at who was on the truck, I honestly felt a huge sense of relief. I knew she was in good hands.
I called the crew before they arrived and gave them a little history, knowing that neither PT FAM MEMBER nor I would make it there before them or before she was transported. I also texted David and asked him to simply let us know where she was being taken. PATIENT always preferred HOSPITAL 1, but knowing she was having chest pain, I had a feeling HOSPITAL 2 might be where she ended up.
David recognized what was happening and acted quickly. He and Artavious treated her with professionalism, compassion, and the kind of calm reassurance that means so much when a patient is scared and doesn’t fully understand what is happening. They explained things to her, kept her informed, and made sure she knew she wasn’t alone.
With FD assisting with the drive, they headed to HOSPITAL 2 while continuing to provide her with excellent care. They called the STEMI alert to the hospital while en route and continued doing everything they could for her.
But what stands out to me the most wasn’t just the medical care.
It was the advocacy.
When they arrived at the hospital and it didn’t seem like everyone was recognizing the situation the same way they had, David didn’t simply step back and hand her over. He continued to advocate for PATIENT. He trusted what he had seen, recognized what was happening, and continued to fight to make sure she received the attention and care she needed.
That meant more to me than I can put into words.
PATIENT absolutely loved both of them. She talked about how kind and professional they were and how comfortable they made her feel during what was an incredibly frightening situation. And, of course, she made sure to mention that she had “a provider who was very nice looking, making her transport that much better.” 😂
But underneath the humor was something much more meaningful: she felt safe with them.
As someone who knows how much she meant to me, knowing that she was scared and sick that day but had two providers beside her who treated her with dignity, kindness, and genuine compassion is something I will never forget.
David and Artavious, thank you.
Thank you for recognizing how sick she was.
Thank you for acting quickly.
Thank you for treating her like a person and not just a patient.
Thank you for explaining things and reassuring her.
And most importantly, thank you for advocating for her when she needed someone to speak up for her.
I want you both to know that you made a difference to someone who meant the world to me.
I will forever be grateful that when one of the people I loved most needed an ambulance, you were the ones who showed up.
Thank you both for taking care of her, for fighting for her, and for giving her the kind of care every patient deserves.
You both represented BCEMS incredibly well, and I am truly grateful for the care you provided to PATIENT.
This is what patient care-patient advocacy-is supposed to look like."
