MONCKS CORNER, S.C. - (Friday, September 11, 2026) Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis announced the arrest of a Moncks Corner man after deputies investigated the theft of multiple sets of vehicle keys and a U-Haul van from a Moncks Corner storage facility. Kenneth Kyle Hampton, 29, of Blondell Lane, was charged with Petit Larceny, Grand Larceny, Malicious Injury to Property, and Resisting Arrest with Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.

On September 8, a Berkeley County deputy responded to Storage King, located at 3039 South Live Oak Drive in Moncks Corner, in reference to a reported theft. The investigation revealed that a male suspect arrived at the property on a bicycle and used bolt cutters to cut the lock securing an after-hours vehicle key drop box. Four sets of vehicle keys were stolen from the box. The suspect then allegedly used one of the stolen sets of keys to take a 2025 Ford Transit van from the property.

Later in the day, a Berkeley County deputy located the stolen Ford Transit van at Mr. Fuel on North Main Street in Summerville and initiated a traffic stop as the vehicle pulled into a parking space. The driver, Hampton, disregarded commands from the deputy and exited the vehicle and fled on foot across North Main Street.

The deputy pursued Hampton and caught up with him in a parking lot on North Main Street. During the attempt to take Hampton into custody, Hampton actively resisted arrest and grabbed at the deputyโ€™s duty belt and service weapon holster. Hampton was subsequently taken into custody.

The stolen Ford Transit van was recovered and returned to U-Haul management.

The Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s Office continues to investigate.

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. - (Tuesday, September 8, 2026) The Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s Office is releasing the results of its Labor Day holiday enforcement efforts conducted from September 4 through September 7, 2026. Deputies maintained an increased presence throughout the holiday period, working both Berkeley County roadways and waterways to promote a safe holiday weekend for residents and visitors.

Throughout the four-day period, deputies conducted proactive traffic enforcement with an emphasis on speeding, impaired driving, seat belt and child restraint violations, distracted driving, and other dangerous driving behaviors. Most notably, Berkeley County experienced zero fatal collisions during the Labor Day holiday period.

During the four-day period, deputies issued a total of 168 traffic citations and 73 warnings, with the majority of warnings involving speeding violations. The traffic citations that were issued included Speeding (55), Hands-Free Violations (19), Seat Belt & Child Restraint Violations (20), Driverโ€™s License Violations (29), and Other Traffic Offenses (45).

Deputies made 11 criminal arrests as a result of traffic enforcement activity during the holiday period. Those were as follows: Fugitives Apprehended: 4, including individuals with ICE detainers related to immigration enforcement; Driving Under the Influence (DUI): 3; Open Container of B**r in a Motor Vehicle: 3; and Disorderly Conduct: 1.

While deputies worked to keep Berkeley County roadways safe, members of the BCSO Marine Patrol were also busy patrolling local waterways throughout the holiday weekend. Marine Patrol deputies responded to disabled vessels, assisted boaters and kayakers in distress, conducted safety contacts, and enforced boating laws and regulations. During the Labor Day holiday period, BCSO Marine Patrol deputies completed nine tows for disabled boats and rescued two kayakers after their kayaks overturned. Deputies also located a missing jet skier during a storm, addressed five wake zone violations, and made three contacts with vessels operating without navigation lights after dark. Additionally, deputies issued one warning to an individual for climbing a train trestle and jumping into the river and issued one citation for an ordinance violation involving conducting business at a boat landing.

The successful location of the missing jet skier and rescue of the two overturned kayakers highlight the important role Marine Patrol deputies play in responding to emergencies on Berkeley Countyโ€™s waterways, particularly during busy holiday weekends and changing weather conditions.

โ€œWhile enforcement is an important part of keeping our roadways safe, our ultimate goal is preventing crashes, injuries and deaths,โ€ Sheriff Lewis stated. โ€œWe are especially thankful to report that there were no fatal collisions during this holiday period. I appreciate our deputies who worked throughout the weekend and the drivers who did their part by slowing down, buckling up and choosing not to drive impaired.โ€

The Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s Office reminds motorists that traffic safety enforcement does not end with the holiday weekend. Deputies will continue working to identify dangerous driving behaviors and encourage everyone traveling throughout Berkeley County to obey traffic laws, remain attentive and make safe decisions behind the wheel.

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. - (Monday, August 24, 2026) Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s Office Marine Patrol deputies rescued a young child and two adults from the water Saturday evening after a small vessel capsized near the d**e during a sudden and severe storm.

The rescue was captured on camera and can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/3_htQTRuJxs

On Saturday, August 22, at approximately 4:30 p.m., a strong storm developed in the area, bringing extremely high winds and dangerous conditions on the water. During the storm, deputies assigned to Marine Patrol were alerted that a small vessel had struck the rocks and capsized, sending several people, including a young child, into the water.

BCSO Marine 6, a SAFE Boat that was operating nearby, immediately responded to the area. Two individuals from the vessel were able to climb onto the rocks and make their way to the top of the d**e. Two adults and the young child remained in the water and required assistance.

During the rescue, a deputy entered the water and successfully reached the young child and two adults. Other deputies on board lowered the bow stairway, allowing the crew to gain closer access to the water. This assisted the deputy in the water to safely bring all three aboard.

Deputies skillfully maneuvered Marine 6 near the rocks despite the severe weather and hazardous conditions, allowing the crew to safely complete the rescue.

Berkeley County EMS responded to the Adkinsโ€™ Boat Landing, where all individuals were evaluated following the incident. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources also responded to the incident to investigate.

The boat crew displayed exceptional bravery and skill throughout the rescue, working together under dangerous weather and water conditions to bring the individuals to safety.

The Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s Office commends those deputies working Marine Patrol that day, and all responding personnel for their quick response, bravery, and teamwork during dangerous and rapidly changing conditions. Their actions helped ensure everyone made it safely out of the water.

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. โ€“ The Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s Office is joining law enforcement agencies across South Carolina and the nation for the 2026 Labor Day Sober or Slammer! enforcement campaign, taking place August 19 through September 7, 2026.

The campaign coincides with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrationโ€™s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over initiative and the South Carolina Department of Public Safetyโ€™s efforts to reduce impaired driving through education and increased enforcement.

Throughout the campaign period, Berkeley County deputies will remain vigilant for impaired drivers and other dangerous driving behaviors. Motorists are reminded that choosing to drive impaired puts not only their own lives at risk, but also the lives of passengers, pedestrians, first responders, and everyone else sharing the roadway.

According to national data, impaired driving continues to be a serious concern during the Labor Day holiday period. During the 2024 Labor Day holiday, 505 people were killed in traffic crashes nationwide. Of those fatalities, 170 occurred in crashes involving at least one alcohol-impaired driver with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office encourages everyone celebrating Labor Day to plan ahead. Never drive after drinking alcohol or using any substance that may impair your ability to safely operate a vehicle.

Drivers should also remember that impaired driving includes more than alcohol. Certain prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and illegal drugs can affect a person's ability to safely operate a vehicle.

The message this Labor Day is simple: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Sober or Slammer!

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. - (Friday, July 24, 2026) Two Berkeley County Sheriff's Office deputies were injured Thursday night after their patrol vehicle was struck from behind by an impaired driver in Summerville. The collision occurred just after 9:30 p.m. near 2076 N. Main Street.

At the time of the crash, a Berkeley County deputy was undergoing field training with her Field Training Officer (FTO). The deputies were stopped at a red light in their marked patrol vehicle on N. Main Street. As the traffic signal turned green and they began to proceed through the intersection, their patrol vehicle was rear-ended by Treyvon Behrends Wallace, 25, of Pinewind Way in Goose Creek.

Both deputies were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. They sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Wallace was arrested by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and charged with Driving Under the Influence.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the collision. Any additional details regarding the crash or the ongoing investigation will be released by SCHP.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office asks the community to keep both deputies in their thoughts as they recover. Driving under the influence puts everyone on the road at risk, and this incident serves as another reminder of the devastating consequences impaired driving can have on our community.
