We are proud to celebrate the completion of Union County’s first conservation easement through the Land Preservation and Easement Program.

The Broome family property, which has been part of Union County’s agricultural landscape for more than 70 years, will now be permanently protected from future development and remain in agricultural use.

This first easement marks an important step in the District’s efforts to protect Union County’s farmland, open spaces and agricultural heritage for generations to come.

We hope this milestone encourages other landowners to explore conservation easements as one way to preserve the land they value and help shape the future of agriculture in Union County.

Last week, Forest Hills High School EC students visited the Agricultural Center for a hands-on exploration of North Carolina Piedmont ecosystems as part of their ecosystems unit.

While the rain kept us from taking our planned nature walk, it didn’t stop the learning! Instead, students brought a piece of the ecosystem indoors through a rotten log exploration, discovering the organisms and interactions that make up a micro-ecosystem.

Looking for hands-on learning opportunities for your EC class? We offer field trips and educational programming that bring classroom concepts to life.

A recent feature from the North Carolina Wildlife Federation highlights the impact of Envirothon right here in Union County, including a student service-learning project at Cane Creek Park focused on protecting habitat for the federally endangered Schweinitz’s sunflower.
