Just before midnight, Town of Monroe volunteer firefighters were called to Cottage St. in the Stevenson district for a reported structure fire. First arriving crews found a two-story home substantially engulfed in fire. Firefighters searched for possible victims and during firefighting operations located one deceased adult and one deceased dog.

Crews continued to battle the fire and extinguish hot spots for several hours overnight into Monday morning. No firefighters were injured.

Given the area does not have fire hydrants, additional tanker trucks from surrounding towns were immediately called, as well as additional firefighters to assist on scene and to provide station coverage.

Monroe Police, EMS and the Fire Marshal’s Office also operated on scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

We express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the resident involved.
