Yesterday, around 12:30pm, the Monroeville Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a Commercial Fire in Company 1's first due. Initial arriving companies were met with significant black smoke on the first division of the structure and a second alarm assignment was requested. Standby companies were requested into the Monroeville stations for additional coverage. Due to the nature of the building and fire conditions, the call progressed to multiple alarms and crews operated on scene for almost 9 hours.

Command: C-60

Units on scene: Quint 1, Truck 4, Engine 61, Engine 31, Tanker 5, Squad 1, Command 32, Truck 283, Truck 303, Truck 227, Truck 236, Truck 300, Engine 229, Engine 211, Engine 306, Engine 224, Rescue 229, Rescue 207, RIT 78, RIT 137, RIT 302, Vent 3, Medic 19, Medic 47, Medic 48, Medic 59, Medic 69, Penn Township EMS for Rehab, Salvation Army 470SS1

Standby Companies: Truck 300 at Company 1 (later pulled to the scene), Engine 213 at Company 3, Truck 57 at Company 4, Engine 285 and Engine 223 at Company 6

Thank you to every firefighter, officer, EMS provider, and support member who worked on scene yesterday. Nearly nine hours of sustained operations takes an incredible amount of teamwork, dedication, and hard work. We also appreciate the departments who provided standby coverage throughout the incident, helping ensure our community continued to have emergency protection while multiple companies were committed to the fire.

A special thank you to our Monroeville Telecommunications Officers who did a fantastic job at dispatching and handling the call, including a Mayday, multiple PAR checks, and coordinating multiple companies, with a calm presence. Also, thank you to Monroeville, PA Police Dept and Monroeville Public Works for assisting with traffic control.

Thank you to everyone who answered the call, supported the operation, provided rehab and resources, and continued working until the job was done.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the Allegheny County Fire Marshall's Office.

Today, members of Monroeville Volunteer Fire Company #1 joined our community at the Mission BBQ 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony to honor the lives lost 25 years ago today.

We remember the 2,977 lives lost, including the 343 FDNY firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, and civilians who made the ultimate sacrifice or never returned home to their families.

For those of us in the fire and emergency services, September 11 carries a special significance. We remember the firefighters and first responders who climbed the stairs while thousands were coming down—answering the call without hesitation and demonstrating courage, service, and sacrifice in the face of unimaginable circumstances.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor their legacy.

Thank you to Mission BBQ for bringing our community together today and ensuring that the promise made in the days following September 11 continues to be upheld:

What were our volunteers up to yesterday? Well, it was another busy day at Company 1!

Throughout the day, our crews:

đźš’ Responded to seven fire calls ranging from automatic fire alarms to reported structure fires
🧯 Provided fire extinguisher training at UPMC East for the second day this week
đźš‘ Assisted with the CCAC Paramedic Program
đźš’ Coordinated the logistics of getting our engine and quint through annual hose testing
🎨 Continued station improvement projects, including painting and installing new lighting for an exhibit-style history wall
đź“‹ Completed the routine administrative and operational work necessary to keep the department running smoothly

Not every hour spent serving our community involves responding to an emergency. Training others, supporting future EMS providers and firefighters, maintaining our apparatus and equipment, improving our station, and handling behind-the-scenes responsibilities are all essential parts of operating a volunteer fire department.

We are incredibly proud of our members who continue to give their time, skills, and energy to serve the community—both when the alarm sounds and during all the hours in between.

This is just a one-day snapshot of what our volunteers do on a routine basis. Interested in seeing what happens during the other 364 days of the year? Send us a message or visit mvfc1.com to learn how you can contribute to the Monroeville Volunteer Fire Department!

Monroeville Volunteer Fire Department Company 1 was proud to assist UPMC East with fire extinguisher training as part of Emergency Preparedness Month!

Our crews spent some time this evening with UPMC East staff reviewing two important tools for responding to a fire emergency: RACE (Rescue, Alarm, Contain, Extinguish/Evacuate) and PASS (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).

And we’re not done yet! 🚒

We’ll be back at UPMC East on Wednesday from 6–8 PM on the patio to give more staff the opportunity to practice using a fire extinguisher in a safe, hands-on environment.

A special thank you to the Healthcare Coalition of Southwestern PA for allowing us to borrow their BullEx Fire Extinguisher Training System and helping make this training possible!

Preparedness starts with knowing what to do — and practicing before an emergency happens. 👨‍🚒🧯
