-Multi-Agency Technical Rescue Response Provides for a Quick Extrication of an Injured Hiker-

At 1713hrs this evening the Montague Center, Turners Falls, and Amherst Massachusetts Fire and EMS agencies were dispatched to Dry Hill Rd for a party off of a trail behind a residence with a leg injury. The Montague Police Department Dispatch and officers provided further information to arriving Fire and EMS crews as to the patient's condition and location. Given the terrain and weather conditions, the Western Mass Regional Technical Rescue Team as well as additional personnel from TFFD were dispatched to the scene. The Greenfield - MA Fire Department was then dispatched to cover Turners Falls/Montague with the Bernardston Fire Department covering the Greenfield Fire Station.
Crews on scene worked to stabilize and subsequently extricate the patient nearly an 1/8 of a mile over steep terrain and slippery conditions. Once extricated, the patient was successfully loaded into Amherst Fire Ambulance for transport. All fire/ems/technical rescue crews were then released.
Thank you to all agencies and personnel involved, especially the Montague Police Dispatch and Massachusetts State Police Shelburne and Northampton Control Dispatch Centers.

We’d like to thank all of our mutual aid departments. Without our strong brotherhood, it would be impossible for us to get the work done. And we appreciate our junior firefighters for showing up and helping with the cleanup .

I would avoid Main Street in Montague Center today. They’re doing construction easily avoided if you take school Street to Station Street.

Smoke detectors and an immediate 911 call resulted in firefighters making a quick stop to a lithium ion battery basement fire in Lake Pleasant this afternoon.

Montague Center Fire and Turners Falls Fire were both dispatched by Massachusetts State Police Shelburne Control Regional Dispatch to Montague Avenue in Lake Pleasant for the reported battery fire in the basement of a residence. Montague Police Department arrived, secured the scene, and confirmed all residents had safely evacuated.
Arriving fire crews requested a First Alarm response for mutual aid as smoke was observed pushing out of the front door. Handlines were immediately stretched to the basement for a quick knock down of the fire as ventilation of the toxic smoke and blistering heat commenced.
Working with the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Fire Investigation Unit, the fire was found to have started from a lithium ion battery charging on a workbench within the basement.

Today’s fire is a reminder that rechargeable batteries even with no obvious signs of damage or wear can possibly fail during charging. Please only use the product-specific chargers and remove batteries from their chargers when fully charged and/or when leaving the room or premises.
