By Air, Sea, or Land – At the time of its creation in 1958, the Sea and Sky Portel was a new and unique concept in resort enjoyment, welcoming aviators and mariners by way of its adjoining airfield and marina.

Tourists could cut travel time by two hours by booking one of the regularly scheduled flights connecting LaGuardia Airport and the new Montauk airstrip –– compared to car or rail transportation taking 3 hours. Three flights flew daily, with more on weekends and holidays. The fare was $20 each way, plus tax, and the flight took only forty minutes.

This week's Throwback Thursday: 1970s Play & Stay

After Ruth Woodrow died in 1983, Bessi Hochstein wrote a letter to the East Hampton Star describing her memories of boarding at Mrs. Woodrow’s cabins in Shepherd’s Neck.

“The first time I was in Montauk was early spring, 1979, the year before I entered college,” she wrote, “I came, like hordes of others my age, looking for a summer job and a place to stay.”

This week's Throwback Thursday - Back to School

Did that gentle little boy grow up to be a veterinarian? Did that earnest little girl go on to become a broadcast journalist?

We don’t know, but in all likelihood some of the children in these photos––taken by Peggy Joyce in, we believe, the early 1960s––today are the grandparents of Montauk School students. Local Montauk kids boarded the school bus again this week, although it’s unlikely that they’ll be carrying a tin lunchbox resembling the one clutched by the child in the third photo, or that the bus driver will be lounging on the hood like the one in the photo below.

This week's Throwback Thursday: Worth a Thousand Words

Either the people on this dock are going home pitifully empty-handed after a fishing trip, or else they have just landed in Montauk on a ferry after visiting New York or New London.
