Earlier this month, our first graders were introduced to a new iPad app called Aqua, and they were absolutely amazed! They were so engaged and eager to explore that they could have played all day! 🩵 I love seeing our kiddos build new technology skills while learning, exploring, and having fun. A huge thank-you to our wonderful Innovative Learning Specialist, Amy Storer for making this such a fun and engaging experience for our little learners!

🎃 This month we kicked off one of our favorite Keenan kindergarten traditions!

We read the story Pumpkin Jack, and our science experiment officially began!

Five years ago, Ms. Hendon started the tradition of reading Pumpkin Jack to her kindergarten class, and she has continued this special tradition every year since! Each year, she brings in a pumpkin to carve as a demonstration. She then places Pumpkin Jack in a tub of soil and adds some water, allowing the students to observe the changes throughout the school year.

At the end of last school year, now-first-grader Bowie Hobson took Pumpkin Jack home and planted a sprout from the experiment in his grandpa’s garden.

After tending to the sprout from April through September, the seeds from last year’s Pumpkin Jack produced the biggest pumpkin kindergarten has ever seen! Bowie, his grandfather, and his little brother cut the pumpkin from the vine and brought it back to school.

Today, our science project came full circle! This year’s kindergartners listened to the story, watched Bowie give a presentation on the life cycle of a pumpkin, and watched as Ms. Hendon carved our new Pumpkin Jack into a jack-o’-lantern.

We planted him in the soil today, and we can’t wait to observe how he changes throughout the school year!

And the best part? One lucky kindergartner will get to take Pumpkin Jack home in the spring to plant him again, continuing this special tradition for another year! 🎃🌱
