Today is the Great Shake Out! This is a nationwide earthquake drill at 10:15am local time.

Did you know that though very rare, Montgomery could experience an earthquake? We have four known seismic zones that affect Alabama including the New Madrid Seismic Zone, the South Appalachian Seismic Zone, the South Carolina Seismic Zone and the Bahamas Fracture Seismic Zone. We have even had 4 earthquakes within 200 miles of Montgomery in the last 90 days! They were all very small and you couldn't feel them, but they did occur.

So if you ever experience an earthquake either here or anywhere else in the world, remember when the ground starts to shake: DROP! to your hands and knees, COVER! your head and neck ideally under a sturdy table, and HOLD ON! until the shaking stops.

Take a moment to practice this drill today at 10:15am for The Great Shakeout!

⚡ PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT: DOWNED POWER LINES ⚡

Montgomery County officials urge all residents to use extreme caution as storm impacts continue. High winds and heavy rain have caused downed trees, damaged infrastructure, and multiple downed power lines across the county. These lines may still have power and can cause severe injury or death.

For your safety:
• ❌ Never approach, touch, or try to move a downed power line.
• ⚠️ Assume ALL downed lines are live.
• 🚫 Do NOT drive over power lines. They may still be “hot” or tangled in debris.
• 📞 Report downed lines immediately to utility providers or local authorities:
• City: 334‑625‑2651
• County: 334‑832‑4980
• Or call 311
• 🌳 Stay alert for fallen trees, blocked roads, and weakened structures.

Power outages and infrastructure issues may continue as crews work to assess and repair damage. Please stay home, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor official updates.
