The Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum is pleased to announce that Danny Klecko, an award-winning poet and Master Bread Baker from St. Paul, Minnesota, has been awarded the 2026 F. Scott Fitzgerald Prize for Literary Excellence. Klecko is the first St. Paulite and the first Minnesotan to receive the prize.
The Fitzgerald Prize for Literary Excellence is awarded annually by the Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum to an author whose work continues the legacy of American storytelling while also exemplifying the craft, wit, and social insight typified by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was a novelist, short story writer, memoirist, essayist, screenwriter, playwright, lyricist, poet, sportswriter, and veteran, and the prize recognizes an author’s contribution in one or more of these areas. Klecko joins a list of past recipients that includes Dolly Parton (2025), Min Jin Lee (2024), Ta-Nehisi Coates (2023), Clint Emerson (2022), Rick Bragg (2021), and Bryan Stevenson (2020).
Few writers have committed to Fitzgerald’s legacy as completely as Klecko. When he decided to write about Fitzgerald, he sold his house and rented a Summit Avenue mansion across the street from the brownstone where Fitzgerald wrote his first novel, This Side of Paradise. He went on to live there for twelve years. That devotion produced The Dead Fitzgeralds (Paris Morning Publications, 2022), a hybrid of poetry and memoir. The book reflects on the literary legacy of St. Paul through Klecko’s friendship with the city’s late poet laureate, whom he called “the Duchess.” It was followed by Zelda’s Bed, which chronicles a 72-hour pilgrimage to Montgomery, Alabama, where Klecko launched The Dead Fitzgeralds at the Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum.
Klecko has baked millions of loaves of sourdough over a decades-long career as a Master Bread Baker, and he has written close to 20 books. His poetry collection Hitman-Baker-Casketmaker won the 2020 Midwest Book Award for poetry.
Klecko also works to bring Fitzgerald to new readers in his hometown. He is preparing for the fourth season of “Fitzgerald in Saint Paul: Short Stories with Klecko,” a series presented with The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library. The series invites audiences to explore Fitzgerald’s St. Paul stories and their present-day resonance.
“We are pleased to award Klecko not only as a native son of St. Paul but also for his commitment to helping preserve Fitzgerald’s legacy in St. Paul and nationally. It is also a pleasure to award a poet, an often-overlooked facet of Fitzgerald’s works,” said Alaina M. Doten, Director of the Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum.
Klecko: During Klecko's adventures, he has had countless highlights...
#1 -Working across Russia for three years and baking for President Gorbachev.
#2 - Spending an evening on stage, in conversation with Isabella Rosselini
#3 - Sleeping in Zelda Fitzgerald's bed
But winning the 2026 Fitzgerald Prize for Literary Excellence (especially the year after Dolly Parton won) will go to the grave with Klecko as the greatest honor of his lifetime.
