A Heartfelt Thank You to SJ County ❤️

As I reflect on my time serving as San Juan County's Economic Development Director, I want to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation to the many individuals, organizations, and communities I have had the privilege of working alongside.

Leaving San Juan County was not an easy decision. In fact, it has been one of the more difficult decisions I have made because of how much this work, the people, and the relationships I have built mean to me. I genuinely loved what I did, and stepping away from something I have invested so much time, energy, and heart into is bittersweet. However, I also recognize that sometimes moving forward requires making difficult decisions, both personally and professionally.

Throughout my time as Director, I have had the opportunity to work with incredible individuals who share a commitment to strengthening our communities and creating opportunities for those who call San Juan County home. I am deeply grateful for the partnerships, collaboration, and support that helped move our department's programs and initiatives forward.

For me, economic development was never simply about programs, projects, or funding. It was about people. It was about listening to our communities, building meaningful relationships, identifying opportunities, and working together toward a stronger future. That is what made this work so rewarding.

I am proud of what we accomplished, the partnerships we strengthened, and the foundation we helped build for future opportunities. Along the way, I gained invaluable experiences, navigated challenges, learned important lessons, and grew both personally and professionally. These are experiences I will carry with me into the next chapter of my life.

Although my time with San Juan County is coming to an end, my commitment to its people and communities remains unchanged. I will always care deeply about the future of this county and the continued success of the initiatives intended to support our local businesses, families, and communities.

To everyone who has worked alongside me, shared their knowledge, offered encouragement, or contributed to our efforts, thank you. Your time, dedication, and willingness to collaborate have meant more to me than you may realize.

As I close this chapter, I do so with gratitude for the opportunities I have had, pride in the work we accomplished together, and optimism for what lies ahead.

With sincere appreciation,

Talia Hansen

Yesterday was a great day at the USU STEAM Expo! 🔬⚙️🎨📚
The San Juan County Economic Development Department was happy to help support the event and be part of a day focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.
It was wonderful to see students learning through hands-on activities, asking questions, and exploring new ideas and future opportunities. Events like the STEAM Expo are a great way to bring our schools, community, and local partners together while encouraging our young people to dream big.
Thank you to USU Blanding, the organizers, volunteers, presenters, and everyone who helped make the event such a great experience for our local students! 💙

🪶 WEAVING OUR STORIES 🪶
Honoring the Past • Creating What Comes Next
Our department had the opportunity to attend the 2026 NASNTI Conference, held September 17–18 at USU Blanding.
This year’s conference brought together students, faculty, staff, and community members to learn from one another, build meaningful connections, support student success, and strengthen our communities.
The conference included powerful speakers and presentations, including keynote speaker Willow Abrahamson, Lemhi Shoshone clinician and cultural advocate, who presented:
“Buha Maga: The Nourishment of the Living Force Power — An Intergenerational Prayer”
We were also proud to have Toniee M. Lewis, USU Blanding graduate student, UCASA SART Coordinator, and former San Juan County Economic Development Department employee, present the workshop:
“Turning Adversity into Action: A Journey of Resilience, Education, and Service”
Her workshop shared a personal journey of overcoming adversity, continuing her education, serving her community, and using life experiences to help create positive change.
Thank you to USU Blanding and everyone involved in the NASNTI Conference for creating a space where stories, culture, education, and community could come together. It was a meaningful two days of honoring where we come from while looking toward what comes next. ❤️

The San Juan County Economic Development Department staff was grateful to attend today’s meeting hosted by Utah Navajo Health System (UNHS). UNHS has also been one of our Learning Exchange presenters, so it was great to continue that partnership outside of our regular Learning Exchange meetings.
Opportunities like this allow us to continue building relationships, supporting one another, and connecting organizations and resources throughout San Juan County.
Thank you to UNHS and everyone who participated today for continuing to work together to strengthen and support our communities!

Today was an incredible day in San Juan County, Utah, learning firsthand about Utah’s role in America’s uranium and energy future.
We brought together Utah State Senate leaders, Governor’s Office staff, San Juan County commissioners, Utah State University, UDOGM, FFSL, GOEO, and industry leaders to discuss responsible development, jobs, energy security, and economic opportunity.
White Mesa Mill — Energy Fuels
We toured White Mesa Mill near Blanding, currently the only operating conventional uranium mill in the United States. The facility is an important part of America’s domestic uranium and critical-minerals supply chain.
Velvet-Wood — Anfield Energy
We also learned about Anfield Energy’s past-producing Velvet-Wood Uranium & Vanadium Project. The project is focused on reopening an existing underground mine with minimal new surface disturbance, modern regulatory standards, water management, and reclamation bonding. It is targeting production by the end of 2026.
Utah’s Mine-to-Mill Future
Velvet-Wood could supply ore to Anfield’s Shootaring Canyon Mill, which is advancing toward a potential 2027 restart. Together, these projects could create a Utah-based mine-to-mill supply chain, supporting 40–60 direct mine jobs, future mill employment, trucking, contractors, and local businesses.
A special thank you to Utah State University for hosting us for lunch and serving delicious Navajo tacos! Your hospitality was greatly appreciated.
Today was about collaboration, responsible resource development, jobs, rural economic growth, and strengthening America’s domestic energy security.
Utah has the resources, workforce, and opportunity to help lead America’s uranium renaissance — responsibly and together.
