May the Books Be With You!
In a library not so far, far away, a special alliance is preparing for an epic mission. The Friends of the Montrose Library and the Montrose Regional Library staff are joining forces to celebrate the power of reading, imagination, and community. No lightsabers are required, but a love of adventure is highly encouraged!
The Friends of the Montrose Library (FOL) Fall Book Sale returns October 22–25, coinciding with the library’s annual Star Wars Reads celebration. Star Wars Reads is a month-long promotion by Disney and Lucasfilm to inspire new storytellers. On Friday, October 23, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., the Youth Services Department will host an afternoon of activities, cosplay, special guests, and free books for children. Visitors may even encounter some familiar characters from a galaxy far, far away wandering through the book sale. Imagine browsing the mysteries while a Stormtrooper searches for his next favorite novel!
While Star Wars showcases rebel heroes from distant galaxies, the Friends of the Library honors traditional heroes much closer to home.
Every book at our sale has been donated, and every hour spent sorting, pricing, organizing, and selling those books is contributed by volunteers. That means all proceeds from our sales go directly toward supporting library programs and services. When you purchase a book, you’re doing much more than adding to your personal collection – you’re helping make our library an even better place for everyone.
And the saga continues after the book sale closes.
We encourage everyone to think of the Friends when it’s time to thin out those crowded bookshelves. Perhaps your children have outgrown their favorite stories, you’ve finished a mystery series, or you’ve finally admitted that some of those books on your shelves are destined to remain unread. We’d love to give them another chapter!
We welcome donations of books, magazines, puzzles, games, music, movies, and other materials. Our volunteers work to find the best possible home for everything we receive. Some treasures appear at our seasonal book sales, while others find new owners through our booth at Country Flair Antiques, the library’s free and pay-by-donation shelves, or our online shops on eBay and Biblio.com. Even items that cannot be resold are responsibly recycled whenever possible.
It’s a wonderful cycle of giving. Your donated items become someone else’s discoveries, and the money raised comes right back to our community through library programs. You don’t need to travel to the Dagobah System to make an impact!
The Fall Book Sale takes place in the Montrose Regional Library meeting room. FOL members enjoy early shopping on Thursday, October 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. The sale opens to everyone Friday, October 23, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and continues Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Please note that the main library will be closed Saturday.) On Sunday, October 25, from 1 to 3 p.m., bargain hunters can fill a new re-usable FOL logo bag for just $5.
Whether you’re hunting for literary treasures, introducing a young Padawan to the joy of reading, or finding new homes for your gently used media, remember Yoda’s wisdom: “Do, or do not. There is no try.” Your donations and purchases make a real difference for your neighbors.
So, as Han Solo would say, “Punch it, Chewie!” Set your course for the library this weekend – and may the books be with you!
