Every year, ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) compiles a list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books in order to inform the public about censorship in Libraries and Schools. The lists are based on information from confidential reports filed by Library professionals and community members, as well as news stories published throughout the United States. πŸ€βŒπŸ“š

The ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) documented 5,668 books banned from Libraries: 66% of the total challenged in 2025. Of the unique titles challenged in 2025, 1,671 (40%) represent the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ people and people of color. An additional 920 books were censored through access restrictions such as relocation or requiring parental permission. This is both the highest number of titles censored in one year and the highest rate of challenges resulting in censorship from 1990–2025. πŸ“ˆβŒπŸ“š

If you believe individuals should be trusted to make their own decisions about what to read, young people deserve to see themselves reflected in a library's books, and parents should not be making decisions about what to read for other parents' children, then join us to Unite Against Book Bans. βŒπŸ“š

Help us defend the freedom to read in your community by signing up to receive updates, action alerts, and tools from the campaign. We're stronger together. Join today: https://uniteagainstbookbans.org/take-action/

When a Library book is censored based upon the identity of its author/one of its characters, or because someone disapproves of the views expressed within it, a voice is silenced and a community is deprived of the opportunity to learn from a differing perspective. πŸ€βŒπŸ“š

In 2025, the American Library Association documented the second highest level of book censorship attempts ever and the continuation of an organized effort to systematically suppress voices and ideas that began in 2021. Last year, 4,235 unique titles were challenged, only five titles short of the highest number ever documented by ALA (2023) and significantly exceeding the annual average of 273 unique titles over the period from 2001–2020. πŸ“ˆπŸ“š
