At approximately 11:13 am on Thursday, October 22, the Moorhead Police Department was conducting a follow up investigation related to a 2nd Degree Assault incident that occurred on Wednesday, October 21. Officers went to a residence in the 1600 block of 20 Street South to speak with a suspect connected to the investigation.

When officers arrived, the suspect locked himself inside the residence and refused to come out. Officers learned he had access to multiple weapons and was experiencing a mental health crisis. To support situational awareness, the Moorhead Fire Department assisted by deploying a drone to provide overhead observation while officers secured the area.

Due to the elevated risk, the Red River Regional SWAT Team was requested to assist in executing a high‑risk warrant. Before tactical operations began, the suspect, Berwar Abdullgafoor, a 34‑year‑old Moorhead resident, exited the residence on his own and surrendered without further incident.

Abdullgafoor was arrested for 2nd Degree Assault, Domestic Assault, and Obstructing Legal Process. He was transported to the Clay County Jail.

There is no ongoing threat to the public. The Moorhead Police Department thanks the Red River Regional SWAT Team and the Moorhead Fire Department for their coordinated response and assistance in safely resolving the incident.

On October 21, 2026, at approximately 6:35 p.m., the Red River Regional Dispatch Center received multiple reports of a vehicle that had left the roadway and struck a fence and a tree in the 2200 block of 34 St S in Moorhead. The vehicle caught fire following the crash, and callers reported that the driver was trapped inside. Several bystanders stopped and attempted to assist prior to the arrival of emergency responders.

Moorhead Police and Fire personnel responded to the scene. Firefighters extricated an adult male, who was the driver and only occupant of the vehicle. He sustained life‑threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he later died despite lifesaving efforts.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation; however, at this point in the investigation, there is no indication that racing or speed‑related activity contributed to the crash. Anyone who witnessed the incident or had contact with the driver prior to the crash is asked to contact the Red River Regional Dispatch Center at 701.451.7660 and request to speak with a Moorhead Police supervisor.

Moorhead Police and Moorhead Fire Department were assisted at the scene by Sanford Ambulance and the Minnesota State Patrol.

No additional information is available at this time. The individual’s name will be released 24 hours after family notifications are completed, allowing relatives the necessary time to receive and process the news privately.

Honoring Officer Peter Poull

Officer Peter Poull was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a murder suspect who was wanted in North Dakota. The man was being watched by other officers. When the suspect saw the other officers, he approached them and abducted them at gunpoint. Officer Poull was notified of the incident and went to the scene near the intersection of Front Street (modern-day Center Avenue) and 8 St. The suspect saw the other officers and opened fire, striking Officer Poull. The suspect then exchanged shots with the other officers, was wounded, and taken into custody.

The man was convicted twice of murdering Officer Poull and was executed on September 20, 1889.

Officer Poull was survived by his wife, 2-week-old daughter, and mother.

Officer Poull, your sacrifice will never be forgotten. We are committed to sharing your story for generations to come.

Our hearts are with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office and the family of Deputy Katherine Frank. This is an incredibly difficult time for everyone who knew and loved her. Her passion for serving others never went unnoticed, and she will be greatly missed by many.

Our department is holding you in our thoughts as you navigate this loss.

Passing of Deputy Katherine Frank -

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office announces with profound sadness the passing of Deputy Katherine Frank, age 26, earlier today. Deputy Frank was surrounded by her family and loved ones in her final moments. In her final act of service and generosity, she became an organ donor, continuing to help others even in her passing. Katherine worked at the South Dakota State Penitentiary from September 2022 until being hired with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office in June 2024.

Deputy Frank’s death is a significant loss to our agency and to the broader law enforcement community in and around Sioux Falls. She served the citizens of Minnehaha County with professionalism, humility, and dedication. Her absence will be felt deeply by all who have had the privilege of working alongside her.

A memorial has been established at the Law Enforcement Center located at 320 W. 4th St., Sioux Falls, SD, for those who wish to pay their respects. The Sheriff’s Office will also continue maintaining a presence at the hospital as we support her family during this difficult time.
Further information regarding funeral services, honors, and departmental arrangements will be provided as soon as it becomes available.

Deputy Frank served with dignity and heart. Her service made a meaningful difference, and her impact will remain with us always.
