Name: Trina Swanson
Affiliation: Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL)
Community: Hermantown, Minnesota
Occupation: Former Director of International Operations, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)

Background

Swanson grew up in Hermantown and spent 25 years in public service, including nearly 20 years with USCIS. She rose to become Director of International Operations, overseeing offices worldwide and helping manage national emergency responses. She received two Department of Homeland Security Secretaryโ€™s Awards for exceptional service. After leaving federal service, she returned to Minnesota and began practicing immigration law. She is running to represent the northern and central Minnesota communities where she grew up.

Philosophy of government and representation

Swanson emphasizes practical leadership, public service, and working across party lines. She says residents of Minnesotaโ€™s Eighth District deserve a representative who listens to their concerns and prioritizes affordability, economic opportunity, and strong local communities.

Most important issues

Healthcare affordability: Fight for universal healthcare, protect Medicare and Medicaid, lower prescription drug costs, and keep rural hospitals and clinics accessible.

Jobs and the cost of living: Support good-paying jobs, strengthen unions and family farms, invest in manufacturing and rural broadband, and make housing and everyday expenses more affordable.

Mining and rural communities: Support responsible economic development that creates local jobs while protecting Minnesotaโ€™s natural resources, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. She also emphasizes respecting Tribal sovereignty and working directly with Tribal Nations.

Name: Keith Ellison
Affiliation: Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL)
Community: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Occupation: Minnesota Attorney General
Education: Juris Doctor, University of Minnesota Law School

Background

Ellison has served as Minnesota's attorney general since 2019. Before that, he represented Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2007 to 2019 and served four years in the Minnesota House of Representatives. He practiced civil-rights and criminal-defense law for 16 years, including serving as executive director of the Legal Rights Center. As attorney general, he led the prosecution team that secured convictions in the George Floyd murder case. His career has focused on consumer protection, civil rights, and public accountability.

Philosophy of government and representation

Ellison describes the attorney general as โ€œthe People's Lawyer,โ€ responsible for protecting Minnesotans from exploitation and helping people live with dignity, safety, and respect. He emphasizes enforcing consumer-protection laws, holding powerful corporations accountable, defending civil rights, and challenging government actions he believes violate the law.

Most important issues

Consumer protection and affordability: Challenge practices that drive up costs for families, including price-fixing, pharmaceutical price increases, medical debt, and abusive housing practices.

Fraud prevention and enforcement: Investigate and prosecute fraud, strengthen efforts to protect public funds, and hold individuals and businesses accountable for financial wrongdoing. His campaign highlights more than 350 fraud convictions secured since he took office.

Public safety and health: Pursue criminal cases within the attorney general's authority, protect children from corporate practices that cause harm, and hold companies accountable for deceptive or dangerous products.

Civil rights and legal accountability: Defend voting rights and reproductive freedoms, protect vulnerable communities, and challenge government actions his office considers unlawful or unconstitutional.
