Mesa Verde Middle School orientation is next week!
Orientation dates:

Grades 7 and 8: Wednesday, Aug. 12, from noon to 3 p.m.

Grade 6: Thursday, Aug. 13, from noon to 2 p.m.

Before orientation, families are asked to review and update their student’s information in Q Parent Connection and complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meals application, even if they don’t think they’ll qualify. These applications help fund staff, technology and arts programs across the district.

Students whose families complete the meals application will receive $5 off a yearbook and be entered to win free tickets to the Halloween Dance. Eighth-grade families will also be entered to win VIP seating and parking at the Promotion Ceremony in June, and one eighth-grader will win a ticket to the end-of-year amusement park field trip.

Need more information? Check your email. MUSD sent a ParentSquare message on July 1, a personalized email with Parent Connection login information on July 22 and instructions in the district’s Aug. 3 newsletter.

Helpful tip: Completing the forms is much easier on a desktop or laptop computer than on a phone or tablet.

We set up a camera during sixth-grade lunch and asked a simple question: What’s been the best part of your week? Check out their responses!

CURRICULUM IN FOCUS: In Ms. Wordin’s eighth grade history class, students stepped back in time to experience what it was like to govern under the Articles of Confederation. Taking on the role of members of Congress, students debated and voted on whether to fund laws, levy taxes and support one another with domestic policies.

Led by a presiding officer (with a periwig!), it didn’t take long for students to see the challenges of America’s first national government. Each state had one equal vote regardless of population, Congress could not enforce laws or collect taxes, and major decisions required unanimous approval, often leading to gridlock and inaction.

By bringing history to life through role-play and debate, students gained a deeper understanding of why the Articles of Confederation struggled and why the U.S. Constitution was created to establish a stronger, more effective government. It was a powerful way to turn a complex political system into an engaging, hands-on learning experience. And, yes, there was a spirited game of rock-paper-scissors to decide who was presiding over the day’s session.
