Billy Steven Perla-Rios, 14 years old, is described as 5'6" to 5'7" feet, approximately 125lbs with dark brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen yesterday (Wednesday October 21st) around 3:00 pm near Freedom High School.

Road Closure Alert (10/14/2026 at 10am) - Morganton Public Safety has temporarily shutdown North Green Street from North Sterling Street to West Catawba Street due to a natural gas leak. The road is expected to reopen in approximtely an hour. Please avoid the area and use alternate routes. Thank you!

East Union St coming out of town down the hill is being re-routed LEFT onto Amherst Road.

Kirksey Drive heading to East Union Street is limited ONLY to those who work at Seiren and/or workers and equipment for the railroad.

70 East/East Union Street coming into town beside Food Lion is still closed and will be re-routed to turn LEFT onto East Fleming Drive to get into town.

Please use caution for workers and heavy equipment staged and traveling to and from the railroad area. We appreciate everyones patience.

East Union Street between the entrance to Seiren and the entrance to Food Lion between Kirksey Drive and East Fleming will be CLOSED temporarily overnight due to the train incident. This post will be updated once the road is back open.

🚨🚨 please be aware and try to avoid the area🚨🚨

Morganton Public Safety is handling an active scene involving the derailment of multiple train cars in Morganton.

One person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

A total of five rail cars overturned near the intersection of HWY 70 and East Fleming Drive. There was no hazardous material spilled from this incident.

Traffic is being diverted at the intersection of HWY 70 and East Fleming Drive.

Please avoid this area as this will be shut down for an extended amount of time.

We will release more information as it becomes available.

Norfolk Southern is on scene as well.

Assisting agencies Burke County Emergency Management and Burke County EMS.

*Due to flooding near the river, please do NOT go on the Greenway from Town Tavern to Greenlee Ford and Catawba Meadows. It is closed and barricades are being put up due to people trying to go in the area*

As the storm moves out of our area please continue to monitor for safety risks. Below we will keep a running list of any major issues within the City Limits. If you can, avoid travel as there are many road ways in Burke County that are partially or fully covered in water. As always, you never know how deep water is, so turn around and find an alternate route if you encounter a roadway that appears to be flooded.
