In honor of Fire Prevention Week, we stopped by Eastwood Elementary School this morning to help students learn the importance of fire safety! Students enjoyed an educational puppet show, got to meet our arson canine and watch her demonstrate her skills, and even participated in an interactive stop, drop and roll demonstration. There were plenty of smiles, lots of great questions, and some very enthusiastic future fire safety experts.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to spend time with our community’s youngest residents and help equip them with the knowledge they need to stay safe. Thank you to the students and staff at Eastwood Elementary for welcoming us! 🚒

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MORGANTOWN FIRE MARSHALS ARREST ONE SUSPECT FOR 1st Degree Arson

September 9, 2026

Morgantown City Fire Marshals have arrested Robert Louis Wilson, 70, of Westover, West Virginia, for 1st Degree Arson following an investigation into a fire that occurred at approximately 10:39 p.m. on September 7, 2026.

Robert Louis Wilson, 440 Dunkard Ave, Westover, West Virginia, was charged after investigators determined he set fire to a pile of construction debris and trash inside a garage space located on the first-floor of 1993 Water Street, Morgantown, West Virginia. The building is a 32-unit apartment building leased to 44 residents.

The fire spread quickly due to the sprinkler system serving the garage spaces being disabled, along with excessive construction debris that was being stored inappropriately.

The Morgantown Fire Department and Office of the Fire Marshal would like to recognize the outstanding work of Captain Mark Thalman and the C-Crew firefighters who responded to the incident. From the time the call was dispatched, crews arrived on scene in just 3 minutes and 26 seconds and had the fire under control in an additional 1 minute and 39 seconds. The rapid response, speed and efficiency of the firefighters prevented what had the potential to become a major loss of life or property.

All tenants were able to remain in their residences following the fire. The Morgantown Fire Marshal's Office is working closely with the building owner and property management company to correct and abate violations identified during the investigation.

Wilson was arraigned in Monongalia County Magistrate Court on September 9, 2026, and bond was set at $30,000. The Morgantown Police Department and Westover Police Department assisted the Morgantown Fire Marshal's Office with the investigation.

Anyone with additional information about this fire should contact the Morgantown Fire Marshal at 304-284-7485.

Firefighters face unique health risks on the job, including an increased risk of certain cancers. In fact, firefighters are 62% more likely to develop esophageal cancer, making awareness and screening especially important for those in the firefighting profession.

Today, Morgantown firefighters had the opportunity to take part in esophageal cancer screenings, an important part of caring for their health. We’re grateful to the healthcare professionals who helped make these screenings available and to our firefighters for prioritizing their health both on and off the job!
