There are very few things that nearly EVERY major office holder in Vermont agrees on. But keeping the Air National Guard in Vermont is one of them.
Senator Patrick Leahy and Governor Jim Douglas were both champions for keeping our fighter wing in Vermont. Since the older F-16s were replaced with modern F-35s, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Peter Welch, Gov. Peter Shumlin and Gov. Phil Scott have all also supported their stationing here and continuing the mission of the air guard in Vermont.
It's an important fact to note … if there are no F-35s, there is no Vermont Air National Guard. Vermont can't have an air wing without aircraft.
So, where does Amanda Janoo stand ... what would she do?
Back in August she told an activist group called Cancel the F-35s, in her own words:
“If there’s anything I can legally do as Governor to get them out of our skies, I’m down.”
The Air National Guard supports more than 1,000 direct jobs, accounting for over $60 million in pay and benefits.
Our National Guard members serve our communities in times of need, from the pandemic to floods and cyber-attacks. They are irreplaceable and we can’t simply cast them aside.
They also serve a strategic national security mission. As many remember, in the hours after the 9/11 attacks, it was the Vermont Air National Guard securing the airspace above Ground Zero.
Vermont just welcomed them home after multiple difficult deployments, with deep gratitude for their sacrifice and service.
As a candidate to be their Commander-in-Chief, Amanda Janoo posted a flashy social media video, without ever acknowledging her real opinions on having this unit in our National Guard.
Amanda Janoo's opposition to the Air National Guard sets her apart from most Democrats, Independents and Republicans.
Governor Scott is a governor who understands the importance of the National Guard and who will support them, not "get them out of our skies."
